                                                           Antiques vs. Collectibles

    Finding a definitive definition for both an antique and a collectible is not possible. Just what
constitutes an antique and what constitutes a collectible is determined by each individual antique
dealer. Many times, the dealers will give varied answers to the seemingly simple question, “What is a
collectible and what is an antique?”

Most dealers will agree that historically an antique is any crafted or manufactured item that is at least
100 years old. Collectibles are items less than 100 years old. Antiques generally are rare and worth a
higher amount, while collectibles’ values are more speculative and can change at a moment’s notice.
(This can be seen with items centered around popular television shows or movies. Some may become
antiques, but normally they are collectibles that will only have value so long as that show or movie
remains popular.)

Some dealers are attempting to lower the standard of an antique. They believe that items over 50
years old should be considered an antique. Those who are reputable antique dealers say the 50 years
definition lowers the standard to a point that dealers can sell collectibles under the name of antiques.

However, it should be noted that the label “antique” or “collectible” has no real effect on the worth of an
item. The price of an item is determined more by whether there is a demand for it. There are very rare
antiques which are sold for much less than a newer collectible, but this is because there is no demand
for the former and a high demand for the latter.

When it comes to purchasing items on the antique or collectible market, the buyer should do a lot of
research before handing over any money. Flea markets with antique stands, antique shops, and
antique malls are plentiful, so dealers have a lot of competition in stocking their shops. This can lead
them to price their items much higher than their true value, which is a bad investment for you. Why buy
an antique or a collectible for more than it is worth?

So, when you compare antiques to collectibles, antiques stand the test of time. Their value remains
constant. Collectibles, however, are priced more on a whim and their long term value is highly
speculative. Exercise caution when investing in collectibles as opposed to antiques.

 The antiques and collectibles category is one of the most popular on consumer-to-consumer auction
sites and marketplaces. Unsurprisingly, most of the antique and collectible objects traded online are
sold in the auction format. After all, this area of human activity has always been the backbone of the
auction business, because the dynamic mechanism of bidding is particularly well suited for determining
the price of non-standard items whose value is open to debate.

Consequently, taking the business of buying and selling antiques online was just a matter of
transplanting a popular activity and a suitable pricing mechanism into a new milieu, the Internet. And
there it flourished from day one and still continues to flourish today.

In the past, the antiques and collectibles world used to be a restricted affair, confined to regional or, at
best, national venues and fairs. The Internet has changed that. It has provided a global market place,
connecting distant buyers and sellers. The objects a buyer would normally spend months or even
years tracking down are now available at any time, from a computer at the buyer's home. The objects a
seller would previously hoard for days or months until he found a buyer will now sell online in a matter
of days or even hours, and often at a better price than could be obtained in the "real world".

The Internet has also empowered buyers and sellers, by making available to both a wealth of
knowledge. It has never been easier to do research about antique and collectible items and to keep
up-to-date with current trends and the latest values. With all that information at their fingertips, a buyer
who overpays for a collectible item and a seller who undersells an antique object are becoming a rarity

Here are a few tips for the sellers of antiques and collectibles:

1. Present your item well. If you do not value your collectible enough to take a good photograph and
write an attractive description, chances are - neither will the potential buyers.

2. List everything you know about the item truthfully, including any defects it may have.

3. Mention the prices a similar item fetched previously only if that is to your advantage: you are under
no obligation to do this.

4. Answer any questions potential buyers may have promptly.

And, for the sake of balance, here are a few tips for the buyers of antiques and collectibles:

1. Read the description carefully.

2. If you are still in doubt about the item, ask the seller a question.

3. If you receive obviously evasive answers to simple questions, look elsewhere.

4. Do not expect the seller to tell you what the current value may be or how much he paid for the

object. Research the item you consider buying on the Internet.
