PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
May is a very “HAPPY” Month. It starts with May Day that sets the whole attitude of the
month. I hope all of you wore a lei and gave a lei to someone you care about. This is such a beautiful
custom we Hawaiians have. Of course with May Day comes May Day Concerts and May Day
Programs. I’m sure many of you attended the Brother’s Cazimero May Day Concert and your
children’s or mo`opuna’s May Day Pageants of which you thoroughly enjoyed. Then of course there
is Mother’s Day where families get together for Brunch or Dinner to honor the Mom’s in our families.
At the end of May we start celebrating Graduations. This is where we witness members of our family
and friends accomplishments a commitment of their dedication to pursue a better life for themselves
and their families. It all starts with Graduations from 6th grade to 7th grade, 9th grade to 10th grade, High
School Graduation, College Graduations starting with Associate Degrees, Bachelor of Arts Degrees,
Master Degrees and the ultimate Doctorate Degrees. May is truly a month of Celebration. How can
you not be Happy ALL month. Ho`omaika`i to all of our Graduates.
This month we honor Betty and Sam Keli`ia`a, charter member’s of the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian
Civic Club. Appropriately, the Keli`ia`a’s are fondly known as our Puakenekene `Ohana. When
flowers are in bloom they bring lei to our meetings for our speakers and donate lei to our Civic Club
functions. Uncle Sam has chaired the Great Aloha Run First Water Station for 22+ years. Aunty Betty
and Uncle Sam can be found at almost every club project and willingly volunteers to chair our food
booths. They are recognized as one of our outstanding “Chefs” of our Club. They have encouraged
their `ohana to be members and be involved in our Club and they are. Forty-one years of dedication as
members of the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club and still working hard. Maika`i Keli`i`a`a `Ohana!
Aloha Mai,
Kaipo Kanahele
