Cell Organelle Notes
Organelle Name Function/Description
Cell Membrane • Surrounds the cell
• Allows items to enter
and leave the cell
through tiny holes
called pores
• Found on the outside
of animal cells and on
the inside of the cell
wall in plant cells
Organelle Name Function/Description
Cell Membrane • JOB: regulates items
in and out of the cell
Organelle Name Function/Description
Cytoplasm • Jelly-like substance
• Is everywhere inside
the cell membrane and
outside the nuclear
membrane
• JOB: holds the
organelles in place
Organelle Name Function/Description
Nucleus • Gives directions to
other organelles
• Contains chromatin
and nucleolus
• JOB: Control center
of the cell
Organelle Name Function/Description
Chromatin • Looks like a mass of
string
• When unwound, it is
called chromosomes
• Found in the nucleus
• JOB: Contains all
genetic information
Organelle Name Function/Description
Nuclear Membrane • Surrounds the nucleus
• JOB: Protects nucleus
Organelle Name Function/Description
Golgi Apparatus • Membrane bound
(also called Golgi complex organelle
or Golgi bodies) • Contains flattened
sacs that look like a
stack of pancakes
• Found throughout
cytoplasm
Organelle Name Function/Description
Golgi Apparatus • JOB: collects items
and packages them
into vesicles for
export or cell use
Organelle Name Function/Description
Lysosomes • Membrane bound
organelle
• Like the stomach of
the cell
• JOB: contains
digestive enzymes that
break down wastes and
recycle dead cell parts
Organelle Name Function/Description
Ribosomes • Small round balls
found free-floating in
the cytoplasm or on
the endoplasmic
reticulum
• JOB: makes protein
Organelle Name Function/Description
Endoplasmic • Membrane bound
Reticulum tubules
• Two types:
– 1. Rough ER – has
ribosomes on it
– 2. Smooth ER – has no
ribosomes on it
Organelle Name Function/Description
Endoplasmic • JOB: transports
Reticulum proteins throughout
the cell
Organelle Name Function/Description
Mitochondria • Membrane bound
organelle
• Bean-shaped with
folded membranes on
the inside
• JOB: makes energy
for cell operations
Organelle Name Function/Description
Vacuole • Membrane bound
organelle
• Animal cells have small
ones throughout the
cytoplasm
• Plant cells usually
have one very large
vacuole
Organelle Name Function/Description
Vacuole • JOB: Stores water,
gasses, and wastes for
the cell
Organelle Name Function/Description
Chloroplasts • Found in plant cells
only
• Provides color to the
plant
• Found throughout the
cytoplasm
Organelle Name Function/Description
Chloroplasts • JOB: performs
photosynthesis for cell
– makes food for plant
Organelle Name Function/Description
Cell Wall • Surrounds plant cells
only
• Found outside the cell
membrane
• JOB: gives rigid
support and structure
to the cell
Organelle Name Function/Description
• Attached to the outside of
Macrofilaments: the cell membrane of some
Cilia & Flagella cells
• Hair-like projections are
called cilia; whip-like
projections are called
flagella
• JOB: moves the cell by
waving its cilia or flagella
Organelle Name Function/Description
• Small membrane bound
Microtubules tubes
• Found throughout the
cytoplasm
• JOB: Provides support
and shapes the cell;
moves the organelles
around within the cell.
