A BEAUTY PAGEANT FOR PENSIONERS - entitled Miss Retirement Home - has been launched in Switzerland.
Organiser Laurent Rerat came up with the idea as a protest against the popular obsession with youth. The only
criteria to enter was that the candidate could walk without an aid, had to be aged over 70, and lived alone. Mr Rerat
is now planning a Mr Retirement Home.
(For our younger listeners you might prefer to enter the Miss World contest. I was planning on entering the Mr World contest but was
told I was too lumpy around the equator!)
A STAR TREK FAN is selling his flat, which he modelled on the Starship Voyager, for £500,000. Tony Alleyne, 54,
began transforming his one-bedroom home in Leicestershire, after his wife left in 1994. First he modelled his
bachelor pad on Captain Kirk’s Starship Enterprise. Then, in 2004, he decided to take it even further into the future
with a Starship Voyager refit. The flat features touch panel lighting, moulded wall panels and - of course - its own
transporter room.
(So if you love ‘space travel’ - but ‘little space’ - this could be the pad for you.)
A GERMAN SHEPHERD whose entire flock of sheep was stolen was amazed to find them back in their field the next day. Gunther
Manninger, 37, called police after his sheep were stolen from a field near the city of Aachen. He said: “I had a sleepless night worrying
about them, and could not believe my eyes when I went to the field the next day to see they had all been returned.”
(Just two questions. When he says he had a sleepless night … what are the chances that he went to sleep counting sheep? Also if a
German shepherd owned an Alsatian … couldn’t it be a bit confusing?)
PEOPLE WHOSE PARTNERS SNORE lose two years of sleep in their lifetime, according to a UK survey. More than one in three Britons
are robbed of a good night’s sleep by snorers. On average, partners are deprived of two hours’ sleep every night. And with an average
relationship lasting 24 years, it adds up to a total loss of two years’ sleep for 15 million people. Two-thirds of snorers are men and are
usually overweight. Their snoring tends to be at its worst after a drinking session.
(It’s also been revealed that two-thirds of drinkers are men who are usually overweight. Also their drinking tends to be worst after a
snoring session.)
A YORK HAIR SALON in England is offering customers ‘trim and tonic’ after successfully applying for a drinks licence. Dannie Lea Hair
Design has put out flyers advertising “short, back and cider”, “buck’s frizz” and “trim and tonic”. Salon owner Dannie Lea said: “We’re
not looking to make a profit from selling drinks because, after all, we are a salon, but we wanted to do something a bit different.
(I’m sure a lot of Aussie blokes would be in favour of enjoying a beer at the barber. In fact I reckon it would be so popular that there
would be ‘barber queues’ - if you get my meaning.)
IKEA IS SELLING FLAT-PACK HOMES in Britain from £70,000 each. The first timber-framed flats have gone on sale. Called BoKlok -
Swedish for ‘live smart’. They are the first of their kind in Britain, and have double glazing, wooden floors and fitted kitchens and
bathrooms.
(I still think I prefer your standard built home. But … maybe you think owning a ‘BoKlok’ is a good ‘Ikea’.)
A TUG-OF-WAR CONTEST involving more than 100,000 people was held in a Chinese town. They used an 1,800 metre, eight tonne steel
‘rope’ in the central square of Lintan town, to celebrate the Lantern Festival. Tug-of-war contests have been a local tradition for more than
600 years in Lintan where the winners are said to enjoy good luck for the next year.
(Sounds like a great idea for half time at this year’s AFL Grand Final. Instead of 100,000 people getting into trouble doing a Mexican
wave why don’t we all ‘pull together’ and enjoy a friendly tug-of-war.)
NAOMI CAMPBELL has been ordered to clean floors as punishment for throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper. The supermodel
was sentenced to five days community service by a court in New York. Campbell had pleaded guilty to reckless assault in a plea bargain
with prosecutors at Manhattan Criminal Court last month. As well as community service, the 36-year-old was also ordered to attend an
anger management course.
(Of course there is another course being run by Russell Crowe which demonstrates various ways of throwing phones - but if Naomi
wants to be a good ‘role super-model’ she should stick to the anger management course.)
A ROMANIAN MAN HAS NAMED HIS DAUGHTER SLK after the “expensive and beautiful” Mercedes model. Birth registry officials
tried to make him change his mind but the father insisted, saying that if the baby had been a boy he would have named him BMW.
(And for those who were wondering what BMW stands for …. we think it’s - ‘Big Money Wasted.’)
A CHINESE STUDENT says he has owned and mastered about 500 mobile phones over the past nine years. Zhang Yi, says he loves
learning new functions of the latest phones. He has become a mobile phone consultant and problem-solver for his fellow students.
(Let’s see if he can solve this problem. How come people prefer to spend 3 minutes typing out a text message - when it only takes 30
secs to say it over the phone?)

So Now You’re A PD - What Next?
I
t's always interesting to chat with Jocks Journal Editor Greg Newman and learn about the new subscribers
coming on board to Jocks Journal as our circulation among radio industry professionals continues to grow.
What's amazed me in the first few months of this year are the number of new PD's signing on for the service.
Some of you may be reading this edition of Jocks Journal for the first time having only recently being promoted
to the PD position. To the new PD's congratulations on your appointment.
For others, you may have been in your present position for a while. Regardless of whether you're new to the
position or have held down the chair for a while, the basics of being a Program Director in 2007 still remain. In
today's tough, competitive markets more and more General Managers are looking for PD's who exhibit leadership
strength.
PD's are "in charge" people. As leaders, you can use your sources of power in sensitive but effective ways.
When you assume your role as leader, you have three sources of power to tap
• Firstly you have "knowledge" because of what you know about the department you lead. When you share
your experience with those who work with you, you make the best use of your "knowledge" power
• Second, you gain power from the role you occupy. Being the Program Director gives you the authority which
you must use gently and wisely
• Third, you have "personality power". You can persuade or motive others through your positive attitude,
friendly manner, patience and other personal characteristics.
Although you must be sensitive in the way you use your power,
(don't let your position go to your head) properly used, the three
sources of power can help you become the type of Program Director
you want to be. One of the hardest transitions to make is having
been "one of the guys" to being promoted to "leading the guys."
Gaining respect and having the ability to communicate your
requirements in the new role requires a great deal of co-operation
among those you work with. Notice I mentioned work with, rather
than work for.
It is important that "new" and even existing Program Directors learn
to communicate a "take charge" image. She or he must let everyone know (co-workers and your superiors
included) that things are under control, that decisions are being made and that the role of Program Director is a
comfortable role for you. All of this must be accomplished without giving an impression that the new position has
gone to your head. It must be a natural transition. Lead by example.
Why is a stronger leader image necessary? Among other reasons, your on air people want you to be a leader.
They will produce more if they know that they are part of a cohesive group with established standards and a set
of goals to achieve. In contrast, a weak Program Director will cause the on air staff and others who work with
you to be confused and unproductive.
When you first start out, like others, you may not have all the confidence you would like, but don't lose faith in
yourself. As a Program Director, you will slowly build your level of personal confidence. That is one of the many
great advantages of becoming a Program Director in the first place.
