COLOSSIANS Chapter 02 SWEET TALKERS – EMPTY DECEIT I. INTRODUCTION A. Last week - Paul encouraging the Colossians. 1. Love great “identifier” of Christian faith! a) John 13:35 B. Philosophies creeping into the church. 1. Chapter 2, Paul will exalt Jesus. 2. Exalt Him over legalism. II. COLOSSIANS 2:1-3 A. “conflict” = “war”. 1. War Paul waged in prayer for the church. 2. He wanted to be with them face to face. 3. Treasures of wisdom are in Christ! III. COLOSSIANS 2:4-5 A. Paul saying, “We have the same Holy Spirit.” 1. Concern is deception. a) satan master of deception. b) There is a saying: c) John 8:44 d) Paul did not want them to be deceived. IV. COLOSSIANS 2:6-10 A. Don’t let some “sweet talker” change the gospel! 1. Walk in the way you have been taught. B. Paul mentions two deceptions. 1. Philosophy = “search for general understanding.” a) “logically sounding” OPINION! 2. Empty deceit = very real but based is vain! a) Verse 8 (1) Traditions, wonderful or awful! (a) World celebrates Easter. (b) Celebrate fat guy dressed in red. (c) Oriental women use to bind their feet! (i) “Traditions of men” (2) Paul’s puts “high minded” philosophers in their place. (a) Elementary principles = study of astrology. (b) Start with false premise, conclusion false. (c) Conclusion false! (i) Verses 9-10 (ii) Now Paul turns to the legalist. V. COLOSSIANS 2:11-12 A. Baptism outward symbol of spiritual work in a person’s heart. 1. Circumcision symbolized giving up the old nature. 2. Baptism symbolizes death to the old nature. a) Accomplished both when they trusted Jesus! VI. COLOSSIANS 2:13-17 1. Sin put us in debt, a debt we could not pay! B. Bank holds lien against your car until paid in full. 1. Once debt paid; you get clear title. 2. Jesus gave us a clear title! a) Verse 15 3. Made a fool out of satan! C. False teachers telling them not to eat certain foods. 1. Romans 14:17-18 2. Matthew 12:2-8 3. Things fulfilled in Christ! 4. Paul takes shots at the Mystics. VII. COLOSSIANS 2:18-19 A. Saying they received “visions” from angels. 1. Something to do with being humble. 1. These teachers trying to “rip them off”. 2. It was fleshly pride. 3. These “deceivers” not hanging onto the Head! a) He holds the body together! b) “Head” not in right place = confusion. c) Their “logic” amiss! C. Self-denial isn’t same as being born-again. VIII. COLOSSIANS 2:20-23 A. Why does a dead person have to worry about what to touch? 1. They died with Christ! B. They, in themselves, an act of the flesh. IX. CONCLUSION A. ONLY Christ conquers the flesh! 1. Cannot have victory over it any other way. 2. To boast = something good in our flesh. 3. If that were the case - Jesus did not have to die! B. Jesus supreme over any philosophy. 1. Supreme over legalism, mystic teachings.
