HKIS Building Surveying Scholarship
for Secondary School Student 2011
Guidelines for Applicants
Established in 1984, the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors is the only professional organization representing
the surveying profession in Hong Kong. The Institute has six Divisions, namely Building Surveying Division;
General Practice Division; Land Surveying Division; Quantity Surveying Division; Planning and Development
Division; and Property and Facility Management Division.
Under the sponsorship of the Building Surveying Division, a scholarship is proposed for Form Six Secondary
School students in Hong Kong with a view to motivate them and promote the choice of building surveying as
their further study.
Aims and Objectives
To recognise the academic achievements of the outstanding full-time Form 6 student in Hong Kong;
To identify potential building surveying students and nurture them to become future Building Surveyors;
To promote the HKIS Building Surveying Division among students in local secondary schools;
To attract the attention of youths on the roles and functions of Building Surveying profession in Hong
To promote the professional image of Building Surveyors.
HK$5,000.00 with certificate; and
A total of ten (10) awards will be allocated this year.
Possess a valid Hong Kong Identity Card;
Be a permanent resident of Hong Kong and have resided in Hong Kong for at least three years;
Be a full-time Form 6 student at a secondary school;
Obtain Level 4 or above in English Language and Chinese Language and Grade C or above in three other
subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) or equivalent;
Have strong leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community services;
Be recommended by their school principals.
Nominations should only be made by the principal of the school. Each School can nominate a maximum
of one candidate;
The nomination must be submitted together with:-
(1) A statement, written by the candidate, on the topic “A Small Step in Building Maintenance, A
Giant Leap in City Safety” in English of not more than 1,000 words;
(2) A statement of recommendation by the school principal who is in support of the nomination;
(3) A copy of the candidate’s HKCEE results; and
(4) Copies of other documentary proof.
Nominations must be completed and returned to HKIS on or before 31 March 2011.
The Judging Panel consists of senior members of the HKIS Building Surveyors;
The selection criteria will be based on:-
(1) HKCEE results in the English Language, Chinese Language and three other subjects;
(2) Leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community services;
(3) Understanding and knowledge of Building Surveying profession; and
(4) Awareness of common building problems in Hong Kong and their social implications.
Candidates will be short-listed and invited for an interview in May 2011. Candidates not invited for
interview by June 2011 shall consider their applications not successful.
The HKIS Building Surveying Division reserves the right to reject or disqualify any applications. The final
decision will be made by the HKIS Building Surveying Judging Panel. In the event of being unable to find
qualified candidates, they may withhold all or any of the awards at their absolute discretion.
The schools and the individual awardees will be notified of the results in June 2011.
Prize of each awardee with certificate will be presented in July 2011.
