March 17 - the 5th Annual Steelspiel! Here’s an event you don’t want to miss! It’s a fun “in house” bonspiel that takes place in the afternoon followed by a pot luck banquet held at the Coraopolis VFW. Everyone is welcome to attend curling and/or the banquet. The League winners are presented with a trophy (guess we’ll have to get a second one since we now have the Olympic League!!), a Chinese auction is held, door prizes, and numerous “secret awards” will be given out!! The regular $10 ice fee applies for the bonspiel and there will be a $10 charge for adults for hall rental at the VFW. Families with children are welcome. We’ll have more details in a couple of weeks. Questions? email: events@pittsburghcurlingclub.com

The USWCA was founded in 1947 to promote and conserve the best interests of the game of curling among women curlers throughout the United States. Currently, the USWCA has sixty-eight member clubs and almost three thousand members. In an effort to carry out the mission of the women who founded the club in 1947, the USWCA has developed a Future Fund. The purpose of the Future Fund is to develop, improve and sustain women’s grass-roots curling. The USWCA is also an active sponsor of United States Curling Association (USCA) programs to benefit all curlers at the club level. All women are invited to join at a cost of only $5.00. All men are also invited to join in a supporting role (the cost is still only $5.00). Yes, guys, it is time to support all the women in the PCC including your mother, sister, wife, daughter and teammates. Additional information can be found on the USWCA’s website: http://www.uswca.org Ladies (and Gentlemen!), this is a great opportunity. If you are interested in becoming a member, all you need to do is pay your dues. The deadline for registration is January 20, 2007. For more information, see Jen Poeschl or Andy Banfield and Thanks!!
For the first half of the 20th century practically all curling stones were made from granite from Ailsa Craig, an island off the Ayrshire coast near Girvan,Scotland. Quarrymen won (quarried) the stone during the summer months, living in camps on the island. The roughly shaped stones were then shipped to the harbour at Girvan and transported to curling stone works in Ayrshire. There the stones were shaped into perfectly standard and matched pairs for use throughout the world. Today most of the granite used in curling stones comes from Wales after a flaw was found in the vein in Scotland, resulting in much waste.
