Heartland Tree Alliance Tree Keepers Orientation
Thank you for your interest in the Heartland Tree Alliance Tree Keepers class. We have included information
here that is important for you to know prior to the first day of class.

   Description of Tree Keepers
The Tree Keepers class is chock-full of great information, everything from tree identification and species
selection to urban soils, planting, pruning and diagnosing tree problems. In addition to the six evening sessions,
   there are two Saturday field sessions for hands-on learning. Attendance is required at each session;
opportunities to make up sessions will be available. Participants are asked to volunteer a total of 24 hours with
Heartland Tree Alliance to help care for young trees on public property in the Kansas City region. The class is
taught by employees from the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Kansas Forest Service, foresters
and parks and recreation employees from across the region, and consultants who are certified arborists.

   Fee
There is a $25 fee for the class. For the Kansas class, there is a $14 registration fee through JCCC and an $11 fee
to HTA, payable the first day of class. For the Missouri class, the $25 fee is all paid to HTA and must be paid prior
to the first day of class. This fee covers the Tree Keepers handbook and handouts/materials given at each
session. Payments for the Missouri class can be made payable to Bridging The Gap/Heartland Tree Alliance and
dropped off or mailed to Bridging The Gap, c/o Heartland Tree Alliance, 435 Westport Rd., Ste. 23, Kansas City,
MO 64111. Please indicate the Tree Keepers class in the memo section on your check.

   Tree Keeper manual
The Tree Keeper manual will be handed out the first day of class.

   How do I register?
To register for the Kansas classes, please call Johnson County Community College at 913-469-2323. To register
for the Missouri classes, please call Angela Schreffler at 816-561-1061, ext. 110. You may register up until one
week before each class.

What if I can’t attend every session?
If you are going to have to miss more than three sessions, it is probably best to wait to take a different class. If
you are going to miss one-two classes, there will be opportunities to make up the sessions by attending the
missed session(s) of a different class (see schedule above). For example, if you need to miss the first session of
the first class, you can still attend the rest of the sessions for the first class and make up the first session at the
second, third, or fourth class. The field labs are easier to make up. Those can be made up by attending a
volunteer event (more information on locations/dates will be provided later) and letting the supervisor at the
event know that you are making up the Tree Keepers field day. Please let Heartland Tree Alliance know ahead
of time if you need to miss a session.

Requirements for Graduation
You must attend all sessions/field days in order to graduate. Please see the above paragraph on how to make
up missed sessions.

Recognition Levels
Upon completing the Tree Keepers course, graduates will receive a certificate of completion and a laminated
wallet card. Upon completion of the 24 volunteer hours, Tree Keepers will receive a Tree Steward t-shirt.

Who to contact
Please contact Angela Schreffler, Heartland Tree Alliance Program Coordinator, with any questions.
