It was with regret that the management committee of Youghal ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Photo Michael Hussey
Golf Club learned of Sally O’Sullivans Decision to retire from
 catering at the club.
Sally has been a stalwart at the club for nigh on twenty years and
it is true to say that Sally, good cuisine, and Youghal Golf club
have been synonymous with each other. Sally’s decision to retire
on Feb 25th will make the function on Valentines Weekend, Sat
16th Feb, all the more poignant.
Sally’s dedication and professionalism have been greatly appreci-
ated by the members and the many visitors to the Club over the
years. We wish Sally a long and happy retirement

                              Happy Valentines Day!
            The History of
            Valentine s Day
EVERY February, across the country, chocolates, flowers, and
gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St.
Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we cele-
brate this holiday? The history of Valentine’s Day -- and its patron
saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has
long been a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it
today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tra-
dition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become asso-
ciated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recog-
nizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus,
all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served
during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II
                                                                                 Treat Your Valentine at

                                                                          Pak Fook
decided that single men made better soldiers than those with
wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his
crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the
decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for

young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered,
Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for
attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where
they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first
’valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that
Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his
jailor’s daughter -- who visited him during his confinement.
                                                                        ~ Chinese Restaurant ~
Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he
signed ’From your Valentine,’ an expression that is still in use

opponents were Blackrock. In 1951 they were captioned by
the youngest player on the team, Jerry lee and beat Cobh in

clubs first time. 1971 should also get a mention when Willie
Sloane was on of the driving forces behind getting the club
started again and continued up to his death in 1980 aged

county in 2006. The Journey and history of this club will go
on and take an extra step on the 10th February and what ever
the outcome it has brought many a joyful tear and embraced
a community which has bellied a lot of belief in the village
and parish of Youghal.
At their most recent AGM outgoing secretary of the club
Art Supple summed it all up in his closing speech, "I have to
thank everybody who has helped in any way to keep this
club going. It’s like a jigsaw, every piece no matter how big
or small is necessary to make the complete picture". No truer
words especially with the next piece for that jigsaw awaiting
this club next Sunday in the village of Kileedy Co Limerick. Action from the semi-final against Clare champions Clooney/Quinn in Newtown
