 Target

Relevance Placental lactogen is structurally, immunologically, and functionally similar to pituitary growth hormone, but is synthesized (in
humans) by the placental syncytiotrophoblast (the outermost fetal component of the placenta). It modifies the metabolic state of
the mother during pregnancy to facilitate the energy supply of the fetus. HPL is only present during pregnancy with maternal serum
levels rising in relation to the growth of the fetus and placenta. Maximum levels are reached near term. In cows, bPL is involved in
the regulation of ovarian function, mammogenesis, lactogenesis, as well as the pregnancy stage-dependent adaptation of nutrient
supplies to the fetus. Placental lactogen is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones and plays an important role
in growth control. The gene is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17 along with four other related genes in the
same transcriptional orientation; an arrangement which is thought to have evolved by a series of gene duplications. Although the
five genes share a remarkably high degree of sequence identity, they are expressed selectively in different tissues.
