PHOTO JOURNALISM
Otherwise know as “Documentary”

   - photography that is the “truth”
   - NO POSING, NO DIRECTION
   - people, places, things AS THEY ARE. Natural. Authentic
   - following, capturing real events, real things, real people.
   - for social awareness + activism = change!

   - ex. Newspaper, news, documentaries, magazines (war)
   - ex. Day in the life of....


LANDSCAPES

   Exotic: - unique, interesting

   Nature:         - rural
                   - absence of people/human impact
                   - UNTOUCHED BEAUTY

   Urban: - presence of people/impact of people
                  - technology & “progress”
                  - harmful (ex. Oil spills)
                  - social activism + awareness
PORTRAITS
   Documentary:   - People in their natural habitat doing their regular
                   things - NO POSING!
                  - Tells you a little about the person, other than
                   what they look like = interest

   Portrait       - straight shoulders, neck, face
                  - physical features ONLY
                  - framing, lighting - can include posing!

   Staged:        - Getting the subject to do something. POSED!
                  - interest, tell story
                  - DIRECTED! Costumes, props, location
STILL LIFE
   - inanimate objects (things)
   - interesting ANGLES. Make the ordinary look
     EXTRODINARY!
   - LIGHTING!!!
   - visual interest - composition of objects, framing, texture,
     shape & form, line, pattern, lighting.
   - proper light exposure - not too dark, not too light!
   - use shadow & reflection = INTEREST!
ABSTRACT
   - unrecognizable
   - unusual framing, composition, angle
   - P&E of art - colour, value, pattern,
      line, light, balance, shape & form, +/-
     space, texture
   - CLOSE! MACRO!
STAGED
   - story telling .... create a narrative = interest
   - PLOT: something is happening OR about to
      happen. IMPLIED ACTION!
   - AUDIENCE INTERACTION - get them
      involved in decoding/reading your work
   - Audience adds own thoughts = ENGAGED!
   - characters, costumes, props, locations
