					Sample Space

  Lesson 10 – 2
              Vocabulary
• Sample Space – a list of all the possible
  outcomes in a probability experiment
• Tree Diagram – one method to construct a
  sample space
• Table – another method to construct a
  sample space
• Fair Game – a game where each player has
  an equal chance of winning
           Things to Know
# 1: Be organized!
when making a sample space, list the
possible outcomes in a methodical way.
Example: roll a number cube, and flip a
  coin
List the outcomes for the number cube,
then match the possible coin flip.
  Using a table will help.
1 Heads This would be
1 Tails your sample
2 Heads space. You can
2 Tails also abbreviate.
3 Heads
3 Tails
            1-H 1-T
4 Heads 2-H 2-T
4 Tails 3-H 3-T
5 Heads
            4-H 4-T
5 Tails
6 Heads
            5-H 5-T
6 Tails 6-H 6-T
           Things to Know
# 2: Tree Diagram:
  Must be very logical:
Start with the 1st event, what are your
  possible outcomes.
The branches come off of each of your
  possible outcomes.
What does the tree diagram to represent
the sample space for flipping 3 coins
  look like?
1st flip 2nd flip 3rd flip
                      H
           H T
  H
                      H
           T T
                      H
           H
   T T

           T H

                      T
    Reading the tree diagram
• The sample space is not the entire tree
diagram. It only shows you how to find the
sample space. You start at one of the
outcomes, follow the arrows to the end.
• Each of the outcomes at the end
  represents how many possible outcomes
there are, not the sample space.
                              HHH THH
• This is your sample space:
                              HHT THT
                              HTH TTH
                              HTT TTT
               Practice
Draw a tree diagram, then identify the
               sample space.
# 1: you have a choice between a hot
dog or hamburger, then potato salad or
  macaroni salad.
# 2: P(hot dog and salad) = 50%
# 3: P(only salad) = 0%; you must get
                     a hot dog or burger
