1. Make enough game boards and materials for each pair of students to play.
Heterogeneously pair your students and allow them time to complete one full
   game.
2. Pass out the two T-Charts and challenge students to find three things in the game
that are similar to real presidential elections and three things that are different.
Tell them they must be able to cite their answers with support from a vetted
content provider such as a text book or well-known website.
3. Conduct a class debrief on the similarities and differences of the game to real life.
Focus on an essential question such as, “Why is running for the presidency so
   challenging in modern politics?”

INSTRUCTIONS: Detail three ways that the game is similar to reality and back each with a
source. Repeat the same exercise by detailing three things that are different and state what
reality is by citing a source.

Setup
•Two players
•Each player has 50 colored paper punches in either red or blue.
•2 die
•Each player starts with $30 Million. From the bank, give each player 1 ten million dollar note, 2 five million dollar notes, and 10 one million dollar
notes.
•Each player has a calculator and score sheet (spreadsheet of states) OR alternately each game has a computer with score sheet on computer
keeping score.
•Each player uses either a red bingo chip or blue bingo chip as their piece to move around square.

Rules
1. FIRST TO 270 WINS - The first player to collect 270 electoral votes wins the Race to the White House.

2. START ON GREEN BY CALIFORNIA- Players start on the green square between California and Alaska and move clockwise around the
     game board.

3. ROLL THE DIE - When rolling the die, the player moves his/her game piece to a state.

4. LANDING ON AN EMPTY STATE - When landing on an empty state (a state that does not have a colored opponents hole punch on it) the
player pays the advertising/organizing fee listed on edge of card to the bank and rolls the die again.
          1. If the die total is an even number, they take the state, place a colored punch hole on it, and use their score sheet to track the
total number of electoral votes they currently have (based on 2012 election) using a calculator.
          2. If the die total is an odd number, the player leaves the state blank.

5. LANDING ON A HELD STATE - When landing on a tile currently held by another player the player has two choices.
        1. The player can pay the bank the amount owed for advertising/organizing but NOT gain control of the state.
        2. The player may choose to pay the bank double the amount owed and roll the die. If the die equals a total of two, six, or twelve,
the player steals the state from the opponent, adds to their tally and forces the other player to subtract the electoral votes from
            their tally.

6. LANDING OR PASSING GREEN TILES - When players pass or land on a green space, they pull from the green deck of cards entitled
“Fundraisers.” Players read the card aloud and take whatever amount is directed from the bank.

7. LANDING ON BLACK TILES - When players land exactly on a black space, they pull from the black deck of cards entitled “Scandals.”
Players read the card aloud follow the directions on the card.

8. RUNNING OUT OF MONEY - If a player should run out of money, they must skip their current turn. On their next turn, he/she must first
pick from the fundraiser cards and then roll the die to move their game piece.

Description: Students learn some of the perils and highlights of running for President. Students compete against one another in a race to 270 electoral votes and a place in history. After the game, students examine similarities and differences to reality using T-Charts and research supported sources. The teacher then debriefs with the students what they've learned.
