EA Guiding Principles
When deciding on architecture to implement, we will:
  1. REUSE before ACQUIRE
  2. ACQUIRE before CREATE
  3. CREATE REUSABLE COMPONENTS

Definitions
ACQUIRE add new components to the architecture either COTS or
                OS/CS
COTS Commercial Off the Shelf / Vendor Supplied
CREATE add new components to the architecture by creating a new
                component
OS-CS Open Source or Community Source
REUSE leverage existing architecture components (cost savings in
                training, infrastructure, etc)

The Value of an Application Portfolio
Internet Explorer 7 – Microsoft announced that production release of
   IE7 on Oct 25, 2006
   – Registration clerks installed IE7 on Oct 26th
   – IE7 is not certified with Oracle Forms and Banner
   – Clerks could not work (our Banner 7 Student system did not work with
     the new browser!)
   – Students had to wait until we re-imaged the PCs

By using the Application Portfolio, the project manager for IE7 was able
   to:
   – identify all web enabled apps (applications to be tested)
   – identify who were the functional and technical leads (build a project team)
   – construct a comprehensive test plan with a list of applications and their
     functional and technical leads.

                                                                          2/17/2012
The Value of an Application Portfolio
Banner Student ERP – Registrar’s Office and Finance complain that the
system is very slow on May 15, 2007
    – Dispatched a team of IT Services Analysts to look at all parts of the
application stack from desktop all the way through to the SAN
    – At the same time, Administrative ERP and Learning Mgmt system users
began to complain of slow response
    – This was rapidly becoming a major service issue to BCIT

By using the Application Portfolio, the EA was able to:
    – Extract the technical architecture attributes of the affected applications
    – Analyse the attributes for a common element
    – Found that all impacted systems used SAN Fibre Channel disk storage
    – Contacted SAN Vendor to assist in diagnosis and found the root cause of
the problem was a SAN configuration attribute
    – construct a comprehensive test plan with a list of applications and their
functional and technical leads that used SAN Fibre disk
