                  February 8, 1954

                  Dear . . . :

Enclosed is an explanatory letter which we have received fro m
the Post Office Department indicating that they intend to procee d
with the closing of the Pleasant Mound Post Office .

As you have undoubtably noted from the press one of the majo r
concerns of the Post Office Department at the time we officiall y
took office was to reduce the huge post office deficit and stil l
render efficient service . In view of our present budget and th e
general line of policy being followed by the administration fo r
economies wherever possible, it is difficult to recommend that
                                                                                        -
we ask the Post Office Department to reverse their current pro
                  posals in effecting savings .

Should you have any additional comments to make I trust you wil l
                  not hesitate to advise .

                  Sincerely ,

                  Everett McKinley Dirksen
