 Tiny Elephant’s Corner
  A NARC Bulletin Exclusive
A monthly column by Ed Deichler, K2TE

                                                     Field Day 2011 – Already?!

Yeah, I guess I’ve done too many Field Days when I realize it is only a month away after having taken down the
antennas and towers just last month, or so it feels. I do have to say, though, that last year’s Field Day was not the
usual physical effort for me so I was able to be more of an Incident Commander. I am happy to report that all ten
fingers are alive and well this year and I’m back to climbing again. I managed to get some practice in about a
month ago when I spent a day repairing and re-installing my inverted L on 160 meters. Only took 4 trips up and
down my tower.

Field Day for this year will again be at Wasserman Park in Merrimack. For those that may think we are in a rut,
Steve, K1SMD worked for months trying to get permission for the club to set up behind the Hollis High school
where we operated years ago. Unfortunately, it was just not possible to get an ok from the school in time to allow
us to set up and operate. All is not lost, however, so there is a good chance we can pull it off for next year.

Field Day is officially about amateurs nationwide exercising some degree of emergency operation in other than a
normal station setup (i.e. get out of the shack) and under less than ideal conditions (i.e. off the power grid and in the
field). In reality, I think it should be called National Ham Radio Open House based on the variety of operating
modes and setups that Field Day demonstrates. Field Day encourages clubs to showcase the variety of the hobby
by offering bonus point opportunities during the weekend. To encourage new hams or those just curious, there is
the Get-On-The-Air (GOTA) station that is under the control of one of the club members. Each transmitter (except
for the GOTA and VHF stations) operating on emergency qualifies as 100 points so clubs have an incentive to
maximize participation. The “open house” atmosphere is reflected in media outreach to publicize the event,
choosing a public location to maximize “capture”, and setting up an information table – all things NARC has done
well every year.

Amateur radio’s ties to the emergency services are highlighted by an incentive to invite public officials and
representatives of emergency organizations such as the Red Cross to visit. The ability to pass health and welfare
traffic to off-load emergency personnel is demonstrated by handling up to 10 messages using the National Traffic
System (NTS) format. A message to the NH ARRL Section Manager or Section Emergency Coordinator in the
NTS format is good for another 100 points. A final opportunity in the message traffic segment is a full copy of the
ARRL Field Day bulletin that may be copied via CW, recorded audio, or a saved RTTY file.

Field Day 2011 – Already?! (Cont’d from Pg 2)

With the exception of the ARRL Field Day bulletin, my feeling is that the NTS system should be dropped as
a Field Day event. The omni-present Internet has pretty well relegated it to the shelf for timely message
delivery. I would like to see it replaced with a demonstration of the digital modes being used for emergency
communications and messages such as FLDigi. What better way to show that ham radio is more than a place
for old men than to “go modern”?

Field Day for 2011 is advertising a rule change that will allow all Class A stations to employ a free
VHF/UHF station without changing the entry category. This station cannot be counted as one of the
transmitters under the 100 points/transmitter rule. The rule change is a subtle one since the original
VHF/UHF station rule applied those Class A stations with two or more transmitters.

What’s this “Class A” thing, you ask? Well, Field Day operating categories are organized in five classes
from A to E. Class A is for powering all equipment from non-commercial (off the grid) means, usually a
generator. Most stations operating for Field Day are Class A. A Class B station is similar to Class A except
no more than two people can operate and a GOTA or VHF/UHF station is not allowed. Both Class A and
Class B stations can operate as an all-battery power case at no more that 5 watts/transmitter. The battery-
operated mode awards the group with a 5-point multiplier/SSB QSO and a 10-point multiplier/CW QSO vice
one and two points respectively for the generator-driven folks. Class C operation is for mobile operation by
trains, planes, and automobiles. Class D is any station operating from the comforts of the shack with the
restriction of not being allowed to work other Class D stations. Finally, a Class E station is the same as a
Class D station except it is running of a generator just like many of us do when the power goes out in the
winter.

So what is in store for NARC this year? Well, come on out to the club meeting and find out. If you can’t
make it, try for the final planning meeting that will take place June 20 at 7 PM in the Nashua Public Library.

THE PROUTY AND HAM RADIO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS!

It’s been 30 years since a group of four nurses at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, NH lost a friend and patient,
Audrey Prouty, to cancer. In 1981, they decided to do a 100 mile bike ride through the White Mountains and raised
about $4000 for cancer research with that modest effort. Local hams joined a few years later to provide
communications and logistics support. Last year, over $2.3 million was raised to support cancer research at the Norris
Cotton Cancer Center at DHMC.

The event now includes several bike routes from 20 to 100 miles, several walking routes, and this year a new shell
rowing course on the Connecticut River! It’s not just on Saturday either – the Prouty Ultimate begins in Manchester,
stops overnight in Hanover, and continues for a second 100 miles on Saturday. The event needs to be both fun and
safe, so health and route safety are prime concerns. We now have a fully staffed operations center operating with a
modified ICS structure, and many more vehicles on the routes. To do this, we need many more hams now than we did
in the early days.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, July NASHUA’S
8 (The Prouty Ultimate) and Saturday, July 9. We have the SAG sites
                                               SEW & VAC
covered, but still need a number of people to cover rover vehicles on both days.

If you know of someone who has or has had cancer (and most of us do!), you know the importance of the research and
the hospital care involved. Please join us in supporting this vital work! You can contact Dave Colter WA1ZCN via
email at: dbcolter@myfairpoint.net. You can also sign up on line at www.theprouty.org.

Ham Radio operations for The Prouty are sponsored and supported by the Twin State Radio Club, SGARES and NH-
ARES.

Minutes of the NARC Club Meeting – May 3, 2011

The Vice President, John Halbert (W1SMN) called the meeting to order early at 7:05 PM in the First Church, and began
 the meeting with introductions.

Program: Program Director, Dave Smith (KA1THZ) introduced Bill Barber (NE1B) and Fred Hillhouse (N7FMH) and
 the evening’s program, “APRS”.

APRS refers to the “Automatic Packet Reporting System” developed by Bob Bruninga (WB4APR). The general concept
of APRS is the Exchange of Location or Information precisely and automatically via radio. An interface such as Tiny
Tracker allows amateurs to use APRS data to map the location of active APRS stations and track moving stations. APRS
also supports limited text messaging, telemetry and weather information.

For a home station the basic components needed are a computer, a Terminal Node Controller and a transceiver. This
would allow the periodic transmission of text messages, local weather data, and announcements. For example, a home
station could list local repeaters, club meeting and hamfest dates.

For mobile use the addition of a GPS is all that is necessary. The mobile station can also include a limited amount of data
with his transmission. Currently Kenwood and Yaesu make Handheld and Mobile units that include the TNC and GPS
 components.

Even hams without APRS can passively participate by monitoring http://aprs.fi. This web site provides overlay map
coverage of current and past APRS reports.

Also of interest is http://www.findu.com which provides more information than you can use. If you have APRS software,
UI-View for Windows or XASTIR for Linux, and a 2 meter receiver you can process the data yourself.

To transfer data there are two external systems employed. First is a digipeater, which receives the packet, stores it, then
based on data in the packet it may retransmit the packet on the same frequency received. The second approach is an
IGate that takes the received packets and enters them into the Internet. It also screens packets on the Internet for local use
and may transmit them on 144.39 MHz.

Programs: June’s program will cover preparation for Field Day.

Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer, Bill Bordy (NJ1H) reported that the current Club Treasury balance is $4042.71.

Activities: Pizza this week will be at Mr. G’s in Merrimack.

Membership: The Membership Director Bill Lana (N4COY) reports that we have a total of 62 members, 54 active and 8
 life members.

New England QSO Party: The President reminded everyone that the NE QSO Party is this weekend, May 7th and 8th.
Check QST or ARRL.com for details.

Adjournment: Having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM. Next Meeting is June 7th.
