Legal Requirements - Antigua
Local authorities are most cooperative
and have simplified arrangement for
marriage and renewal of vows on
Antigua. There is a 24-hour residency
requirement, to include at least one
business day (Monday – Thursday, if
you arrive on Friday you will marry on
the next Tuesday). If neither person has
been married before, birth certificates
are sufficient; otherwise, a former
spouses death certificate or divorce
decree is needed.
At the Ministry of Legal Affairs in
downtown St. Johns, you meet for a
friendly interview where you present
the necessary legal paperwork and submit the Marriage Application (application will be completed prior to
your meeting at Jumby Bay).
You will proceed to The High Court where you meet with a Marriage Officer who will review your
application, issue a Marriage License and set the date, time and place for the ceremony.
On the date of your destination wedding, the marriage officer will come to Jumby Bay to perform a civil
ceremony. A non-denominational religious ceremony is also possible and our wedding coordinator will
gladly advise you of the officiant available.
Please note that all documents you are required to furnish must bear legal names, otherwise an affidavit is
needed stating that one or the other is known by a different name. Passports are required and if either
person has been divorced, the original (or a notarized copy) of the divorce decree must be presented.
Curtain Bluff

Description
For over 45 years, Curtain Bluff has welcomed guests to Antigua. American owners Howard and Michelle
Hulford still have a presence here, with the resort being managed professionally for years by Rob Sherman
and Cal Roberts. The hotel’s ‘no key’ approach reflects the trust placed in their long-serving staff and many
repeat guests.

Fifteen acres of beach and gardens create spectacular vistas for the fully inclusive 72 rooms and suites
scattered up the bluff, where cooling sea breezes render air conditioning unnecessary even though the
amenity is available.
The spacious Junior Suites have marble bathrooms and sunken living rooms, and are situated on the resort’s
surf beach (a second beach offers calmer waters for water sports). The luxurious Morris Bay and Grace Bay
Suites feature extra touches of indulgence such as four poster beds and balcony Jacuzzis.

The roomy accommodation is ideal for families, and both children and adults will find plenty to keep them
amused here. Each May, Curtain Bluff hosts Antigua Tennis Week. Four floodlit courts and three resident
pros will help improve your own game, or there’s squash, yoga, swimming in the 75 foot pool, croquet and
a full range of motorized and non-motorized water sports.

Renew your energy at the weekly beach luncheon (complete with steel band) or in the main restaurant,
accompanied by a bottle from the prodigious wine cellar – only 450 different vintages to choose from!
Accomondation

The 72 guest rooms and suites offer all the qualities of island living combined with every essential
amenity and service. Each room is decorated with wicker, sea grass, and exotic wood furnishings, ceiling
fans, louvered windows, cool tiled floors and elegant marble or granite bathrooms. Whether on the beach or
on the bluff, every room offers breathtaking ocean vistas and a private balcony.

For Honeymooners, a bottle of Champagne is placed in your room on arrival and you may enjoy a private
dinner in the Gazebo plus a romantic sail on the hotel's yacht "Sentio".

Curtain Bluff. For this reason room keys are not needed. However, doors may be locked from the inside
and each room is equipped with an in-room safe for guest convenience.

Howard and Chelle Hulford's private home at the top of the bluff also serves as the location for weddings.
The Hulfords welcome all Curtain Bluff guests into their home for a weekly cocktail party.

conditioning is also available in each room. Guests enjoy tropical surroundings with the absence of
radios and televisions in their guest rooms.

DINING
Curtain Bluff offers some of the finest dining in the Caribbean with breakfast, lunch and dinner included in
the price.

In fact, the commitment to superior dining at Curtain Bluff is so serious that Howard Hulford created his
own import company in order to ensure consistent availability of fresh ingredients from around the world.
French-born Christophe Blatz has been overseeing the kitchen at Curtain Bluff as Executive Chef for the
past seven seasons, and was Sous Chef for the previous seven years. Christophe Blatz trained under such
notable chefs as Alain Ducasse and cooked in some of the finest Michelin star-rated kitchens in France
including Les Ambassadeurs restaurant in the Hotel du Crillon Paris. His background fuses French
continental with Caribbean flavors and ingredients. Working alongside chef Christophe Blatz is Mark
Andrew Smith, master of the art of pastry making. Chef Smith's extensive resume includes over five years
as pastry chef for P&O Cruises and four years as pastry chef at Carlisle Bay Resort in Antigua. Smith,
joined by Executive Sous Chef, Burdette Martin, contribute an amazing flavor to Curtain Bluff.

Cooking Classes with the Chef - Chef Christophe Blatz teaches guests his personal style of fusing French
flavors with Caribbean cuisine. Guests learn to cook lunch in the Bluff House, the private home of the
Hulfords. Classes are $60 and include lunch and a specially selected bottle of wine from Curtain Bluff's
cellar.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner - Breakfast and dinner are served al fresco in the Main Dining Room with
sweeping views of the gardens. Lunch is served around the main bar terrace or in the more casual
atmosphere of the Beach Club, which has been restyled with luxurious teak furniture. In-room dining is
available during all meal hours.

Afternoon Tea - Afternoon tea is served on the Sugar Mill Terrace.

Hors d'oeuvres - At cocktail hour, guests can enjoy hot and cold hors d'oeuvres inside the Sugar Mill Bar or
on its romantic terrace.

Attire - Attire is very casual during the day, but beach cover-ups are appreciated in the dining room at
breakfast. At other times gentlemen are requested to wear long pants (no jeans, please), a collared shirt and
dress shoes in the evening.

Entertainment - Live music is played nightly for dancing in the Garden Pavilion. There is also a weekly
beach party luncheon with a live steel-drum band and Caribbean buffet.
WINES
Curtain Bluff has one of the most highly regarded wine cellars in the Caribbean, boasting over 25,000

owner, Howard Hulford.

Wine tasting is offered weekly in the cellar and conducted by one of Curtain Bluff's expert sommeliers,
trained in the wine regions of France.

SPA
The only thing better than a hotel room with an exceptional view is a spa room with one. The 5,000 square-
foot Spa at Curtain Bluff opened in June 2007 epitomizes the gentle marrying of Caribbean sensibility with
an ultra-luxurious environment. The new spa is located on the bluff, and sits overlooking the ocean and the
nearby island of Montserrat. The Spa at Curtain Bluff includes five treatment rooms: four single and one
especially for couples. Massage suites each have their own private balcony.

Accommodations

Suites
The first thing you’ll notice about your Suite is the fabulous beachfront location. Then you’ll quickly
realize that our suite accommodations offer all the comforts and amenities you’d expect of an award-
winning resort. We’re especially proud of our 32 new Premium Suites, which offer a stylish departure in
décor from our original Caribbean-style rooms. These suites have a luxurious feel, with gleaming granite,
tropical photographs and dark acacia wood furnishings that are both understated and refined. Step down
into the sunken living room and open the sliding, floor-to-ceiling doors, then perch on a stylish sofa to
enjoy the sea breeze and stellar views. You’ll also notice the opulent feel of 400-thread-count sheets and
the cozy throws that grace our new king beds.
We know that many of our longstanding guests at Galley find our guestrooms mercifully free of
technology, and we will continue to make those total-escape rooms available. On the other hand, for those
of you who can’t bear to part with your Blackberry and 24/7 access to the rest of the world, we’ve installed
wireless Internet access as well as 32-inch, flat-screen, wall-mounted TVs, iPod alarm clocks and DVD
players. You can opt for naturally air-cooled bliss with ceiling fans and sea breezes, or set the individually
controlled air conditioning – it’s up to you. The graciously appointed, spacious bathrooms are equipped
with his-and-hers showers, a deep, corner-installed soaking tub for two, double sinks, a magnifying mirror
for makeup and shaving, fluffy white towels and luxurious Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. Step outside onto
your balcony or patio and you’ll find a pair of comfy, all-weather rattan chaises to settle into, as well as a
beach shower.

Cottages
Our Gauguin cottages reflect the artist’s lifestyle in Tahiti, with privacy that represents a departure from
many of the constraints of civilization, along with the comfort you’d expect of a stay at Galley Bay. Settle
in close to our peaceful lagoon, a sanctuary for beautiful native birds and wildlife, and enjoy the solitude
amid the deep greenery that surrounds the cottages. As you approach, you’ll see the peaked, thatched roofs
poking above the foliage and a few hints of the thick, round walls of each unit – twin “rondoval” cottages
joined by a sheltered breezeway. They’re especially popular with newlyweds who wish to unplug from the
world for awhile. In the bedroom, cool, whitewashed walls, woven bamboo ceilings, louvered windows and
terra-cotta tile create a rustic, Tahitian ambiance, with bold splashes of bright color that echo Gauguin’s
absorbing natural palette, and the deep cool provided by individually controlled air conditioning units.
Across the breezeway is a bath equipped with a shower and dressing area, with louvered windows
providing fresh breezes and the refreshing sensation of a beach shower to complete the feeling of being
immersed in nature. You can brew your morning coffee in your room, then step outside and relax on your
concealed patio, with its adjoining private plunge pool--the perfect spot for a romantic dip.

Guestroom
Offering a touch of Old Caribbean warmth and hospitality, our Superior and Deluxe Beachfront rooms are
comfortable, romantic hideaways set practically at the water’s edge. Replete with colorful island artwork,
rooms feature vibrant hued accents, muted greens and warm tones of wicker that play against the cool
backdrop of the whitewashed walls and echo the gracious Caribbean tones of Galley Bay.
Here, you’ll enjoy king beds, ceiling fans, satellite TV and mini-refrigerators, stocked with cool drinks. In-
room amenities also include a wet bar, coffee/tea machine, a radio alarm clock and direct-dial phones. Step
outside and you’ll find a patio or balcony with a beach shower, and a pair of comfortable all-weather rattan
chaises for lounging, reading, or an impromptu nap. The spacious bath includes a shower.

13 Gauguin Cottages with private splash pools
(Approximately 268 sq.ft.) Situated close to the bird sanctuary lagoon about 50-yards from the beach. Each
one consists of two separate thatched rondavels connected by a sheltered breezeway - one is an air-
conditioned bedroom and the other is a dressing room/bathroom with ceiling fan and shower. Their splash
pools measure a minimum of 7 ft. by 9 ft. and feature adjacent sundecks concealed by either the tropical
vegetation or screens made from natural Spanish heather.

10 Superior Beachfront Rooms
(Approximately 270 sq. ft.) These traditional single level rooms are located directly on the beach and
feature vaulted celings, private terraces and ensuite bathrooms with showers only. A few seconds is all it
takes to get from bed to sea, whilst rattan furnishings, louvered windows and colorful local art create a
mood that is quintessentially Caribbean.

29 Deluxe Beachfront Rooms
(Approximately 340 sq. ft.) Located in one or two-storey buildings on the beach, these more spacious
rooms feature walk-in closets, bathrooms with showers and large beach patios with beach showers. Guests
can walk straight out onto the sands from the lower level rooms, whilst upper floor rooms boast spectacular
views over the Caribbean Sea.

46 Premium Beachfront Suites
(Approximately 568 sq. ft.) The largest and most luxurious beachfront accommodation. Located in two-
storey buildings, these contemporary split-level suites feature a sunken living room with a wet-bar, floor-
to-ceiling windows with spectacular views, private furnished terraces or balconies and oversized bathrooms
with bidets, ‘his & hers’ showers and extra large bathtubs.
Wedding
With a beautiful location that’s designed with privacy and romance in mind, Galley Bay is the perfect
choice for a wedding. The resort is dedicated to adults for all but two weeks a year, and its lovely, rustic
beachfront gazebo and spectacular beach and garden settings make for one-of-a-kind weddings that are
limited only by your imagination.
The resort’s complimentary wedding package, a value of $899, includes a ceremony at the beachfront
gazebo or at one of the resorts other lovely sites, the services of one of our wedding coordinators, floral
decorations, a bridal bouquet, a boutonniere, a one-tier wedding cake, and a bottle of champagne to toast
the newlyweds. Registrar costs, roundtrip transportation to the Ministry of Legal Affairs in St. John’s,
ceremony charges, taxes and gratuities also are included. Customized touches, such as the services of a
photographer, a videographer and a steel-pan soloist can be arranged for an additional fee.

Honeymoon
The lush beauty of tropical vegetation, a white sand beach lapped by the brilliant Caribbean Sea and an all-
inclusive plan that provides for all the basics – including romantic dinners, snorkeling adventures and
lovely accommodations – make Galley Bay a naturally romantic spot for a honeymoon.
Couples who want to be pampered can also opt for add-ons such as The Pampered & Indulged Package. It
costs $375 per couple (plus 20.5% tax and service) and includes a champagne Continental breakfast in bed
one morning; a his-and-hers, one-hour aromatherapy massage; a his-and-hers manicure, pedicure or facial;
a spa pack of body products, and two matching Galley Bay bathrobes to take home.

Anniversaries
There’s no better way to celebrate your anniversary than with a vacation at Galley Bay. To make the day
even more memorable, consider renewing your vows. You might choose an informal barefoot-on-the-beach
ceremony or a more formal garden or gazebo setting for your vow exchange.
The Vow Renewal Package costs $450 and consists of services of the wedding coordinator, a decorated
venue for the ceremony, services of the registrar, a festive cake, and a bottle of chilled champagne to toast
the ceremony.

Restaurants & Bars
Oceanfront dining in two restaurants
Why not begin your evening with a sundowner in our informal oceanfront Teepee Bar? There’s nothing
quite like sipping a rum punch and watching the sun slowly sink behind the Caribbean Sea. Or you may
prefer cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in our elegant Lounge Bar, the friendly staff and lively rhythms
guaranteeing a memorable occasion.
Your table at the oceanfront Seagrape Restaurant then awaits, the award-winning Euro-Caribbean cuisine
of our European Executive Chef showcasing the finest local produce and seafood. Or for a delightful
change of scene, why not reserve one of the thatched cabanas in the more intimate Gauguin Restaurant?
Here you can dine a deux on delicious grill-type fare enhanced by candlelight and the sound of the surf.
The Seagrape is our main restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Gauguin is a more intimate
dining experience which is open for casual lunches and a more formal dinner. There is live entertainment
every evening.
Dress Code: In the restaurants, shoes are worn and bathing suites are covered. After 6:30 p.m., men wear
shirts with collars and short or long sleeves (no T-shirts or tank tops) and slacks (no shorts, jeans, capri or
3/4 pants); and women wear dresses, skirts, slacks, culottes or in the Summer tailored Bermuda-length
shorts (no "short shorts", cutoffs or jeans).

Lounges and Bars
Enjoy a cooling break from the sun by day or a satisfying nightcap at any one of Galley Bay’s three open-
air lounges. All three serve a wonderful selection of cooling Caribbean cocktails, top-shelf liquor and wines
by the glass, along with nonalcoholic beverages.
Make a point of stopping by the distinctive TeePee Bar, with its high peaked roof. It’s famous for the
Galley Bay Special, a delightful frozen mixture of Cavalier light rum, coconut cream, grenadine and fresh
bananas. The TeePee Bar is a popular gathering spot where guests enjoy each other’s company and
spectacular sea views, both day and night. The Lounge Bar, which is open from lunchtime onward, is a
fine place to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in a comfortable, social setting, and enjoy live nightly
entertainment. For the utmost in romance, the Gauguin Bar welcomes guests before and after lunch and
dinner in a lovely setting with a very private atmosphere.

Entertainments
No Caribbean experience would be complete without the music of the islands. Galley Bay makes it a point
to keep its guests entertained with the best local musicians, who bring island-inflected live music to the
resort each night. Steel pan, reggae and island adaptations of classic popular music create a romantic milieu
for unforgettably romantic evenings at Galley Bay.

Resort Amenities
At Galley Bay, you’re literally surrounded by spectacular scenery. From our oceanfront rooms and lagoon-
view Gauguin cottages to our spacious sundecks and charming al fresco restaurants and lounges, the
spectacular sugar-white sands and the ever-changing hues of the sea and lagoon will make your stay
unforgettable. At our natural bird sanctuary, you’ll enjoy the presence of swooping pelicans, majestic
frigate birds and elegant heron, to name just a few of Galley Bay’s numerous avian residents. You’ll also
want to keep your eyes peeled for the intriguing bright-red ghost crabs that call this place home.
Romance and relaxation are always on the agenda at Galley Bay, making this an idyllic hideaway for all
couples, especially honeymooners and those planning a distinctive wedding or reception. By day, guests are
welcome to enjoy complimentary non-motorized water sports and other outdoor activities such as bicycling
and tennis, and to work out in our air-conditioned fitness center. Those who wish to explore beyond the
resort’s grounds, can arrange dive and golf trips for an additional fee. Adventurous excursions, sightseeing
and shopping outings also are available.
Premium touches abound. Depending on the room you book, you may find wireless Internet service and
iPod alarm clocks as well as quality furnishings, beach showers, and private patios or verandahs. Our new
spa and salon facilities, which are slated to open in December, will raise the bar for pampering at Galley
Bay.

Relax

Massage
Welcome to Indulge spa!
For the utmost in relaxation and pampering, we invite guests to explore Indulge, our beautiful new spa,
which made its debut in January 2008. Indulge is inspired by the distinctive look of our Gauguin cottages,
and is centrally located, adjacent to the calming waters of our lagoon and surrounding bird sanctuary. The
spacious, multi-level hideaway features three massage areas, two of which are rustic, open-air treatment
“pods.” The pods are rough-hewn, airy massage decks draped with sheer, white curtains for privacy, and
both overlook the bird sanctuary and lagoon. The second, shaded treatment pod is designed to
accommodate two massage tables, for romantic his-and-hers treatments, in keeping with Galley Bay’s
emphasis on couples.
While we can’t guarantee that you’ll manage to stay awake during your relaxing treatments, if you do,
you’ll enjoy the wonderful lagoon view, courtesy of mirrors strategically placed at the base of each
massage bed for just this purpose. The spa also has a second couples room and a third, air-conditioned
private massage room.
Before or after your treatment, you’re welcome to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings on our third,
open-air relaxation pod. Here at Indulge, you’ll also be able to enjoy the spa pool and surrounding deck,
either pre- or post-treatment.
A full range of facials, skincare and therapeutic massage treatments is available, and you’ll be able to mix-
and-match your favorites for a truly relaxing experience that’s tailored just for you. Also new to the spa is a
full line of world-class Pevonia Botanica skincare products, in keeping with the Indulge spa focus on
nature.
Throughout the Indulge spa, we’ve also kept nature in mind by using beautiful, rustic materials that
complement the colors and textures found in our Antiguan surroundings. Throughout the spa, guests enjoy
the soothing beiges and browns of natural wood, the textures of rattan and wicker, the warm red of terra-
cotta planters, and shimmering splashes of gold, brown and green in sumptuous fabrics, for a touch of
elegance.
In-room treatments can also be provided for guests who desire the utmost in privacy combined with the
best in spa-style pampering. You can take a bit of indulgence home with you, as beauty products used
during your treatment are available for purchase, for a luxurious remembrance of Galley Bay.

Activities

Swim & Snorkel
At Galley Bay, the beach is never far away. Just a few steps from your room, our three-quarter-mile-long
beach is the perfect place for a cooling swim or an invigorating beach walk. If you’ve always wanted to
explore the under-sea world, this is the time. Snorkeling equipment and caring instruction is complimentary
at Galley Bay.
If you prefer your water flat, not fizzy, the free-form pool and its distinctive waterfall provide ample space
to practice your strokes, and plenty of deck space and chaise lounges for reclining, reading, and soaking up
the sun. If you’re staying in our Gauguin cottages, you also can enjoy private swims in your own plunge
pool overlooking the lagoon, where you’ll enjoy great views of spectacular native birds and wildlife.

Sea Sport
On Galley Bay’s beautiful, three-quarter-mile crescent of sand, the inviting sea is a fantastic natural
playground for a host of non-motorized water sports. All lessons and equipment are included, just another
luxurious reason to choose an all-inclusive stay at Galley Bay.
Try your hand at sailing a Sunfish for a remarkable view of the coast from offshore. You can ply the waters
in a sea kayak and navigate the waves as you explore the extreme, rocky reaches of our beautiful cove.
You’ll enjoy the view – and you’ll likely be viewed as you make your way up and down the shore – by our
celebrity neighbors whose elaborate homes overlook Galley Bay.
For a real workout, you can make the most of the breezes with a windsurfing experience, and if you’re new
to the sport, our able staff is more than happy to help you find your feet and teach you the ins and outs of
our equipment.
To truly take to the seas, there’s nothing like sailing aboard a catamaran, and our Hobie-style boats are at
your disposal during your stay at Galley Bay. You’ll find that the azure waters off Galley Bay boast a wide
range of indigenous sea life; more than 70 species of fish make their homes in the sea surrounding Antigua.

Fitness Center
There’s no reason to take a vacation from your exercise regimen while you’re at Galley Bay. Free weights
and cardio equipment let you keep up your routine – or start a new one – in the comfort of our air-
conditioned Fitness Center. You can also maintain your aerobic conditioning with a run on our jogging
track or along the three-quarter-mile beachfront.

Land Sport
On land, you can partake of a wide array of sports and pastimes. Galley Bay features an Astro-Turf tennis
court for daytime play. To put a new spin on your game, join one of our clinics or ask us to arrange for
personal instruction. You can also try your hand at table tennis, or borrow a bicycle for a spin around the
property.
Starting in 2008, games of lawn croquet, horseshoes and shuffleboard will provide opportunities to flex
your competitive muscles and socialize in a gorgeous tropical setting.
Excursion

Beyond the grounds of Galley Bay, a host of exciting adventures are all within easy reach. Join a Jeep
adventure into the rainforest, play golf, or discover some of the island’s 365 beautiful beaches. The island
also has a fascinating history, revealed in several interesting sites around the island. You’ll also want to
stroll around the vibrant capital city of St. John’s, stopping to dine and to shop for unusual souvenirs. Our
experienced guest services staff can arrange everything you need to make your excursion complete, from
transportation and directions to suggestions for things to see along the way.

GENERAL INFORMATION

ATMs
Not all ATMs in the Caribbean operate like those in your home country. Some may only accept a four digit
PIN number, so if yours is longer you may want to change it before your trip. Ensure you keep your travel
money in your primary chequing account as some ATMs default to this account and will not allow you to
choose another. Withdrawal fees are generally much higher outside your home country.

On Antigua the main banks are Bank of Antigua (tel 268/480-5300), FirstCaribbean International Bank (tel
268/562-2640), Royal Bank of Canada (tel 268/480-1150) and Scotiabank (tel 268/480-1585). Generally
they accept major credit cards on the Cirrus/Maestro and Electron/Plus networks and dispense Eastern
Caribbean dollars. The Scotiabank ATM at the cruise ship dock also dispenses US dollars.

In Barbuda you'll find a branch of the Antigua Commercial Bank (tel 268/481-4215) near Codrington
Airport.

BANKING AND BUSINESS HOURS

Banks
Hours vary widely depending on the bank and the branch, but most close for a few hours during lunch. In
general they are open Mon-Thurs 8/9am-2/3/5pm (some are closed 1-3pm), Fri 8/9am-4/5pm (some are
closed 12 noon-2/3pm), and Sat 8/9am-12 noon (Bank of Antigua only).

CHURCHES/RELIGIONS
Mostly Anglican. There are also some other Protestant churches, including Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist,
Moravian, Pentecostal and Seventh-day Adventist. Roman Catholic is also represented.

CURRENCY AND CREDIT CARDS
The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$ or XCD), which is divided into 100 cents. Paper
money runs in denominations of EC$5, EC$10, EC$20, EC$50 and EC$100 bills, and coins in 1¢, 2¢, 5¢,
10¢, 25¢ and EC$1 pieces.

HEALTH STANDARDS
Antigua & Barbuda has one hospital, Holberton Hospital (tel 462-0251; St John's), a private clinic and a
number of health centres. The new Mount St John's Hospital and Medical Centre is due for completion in
October 2006. The private Adelin Medical Centre (tel 462-0866; St John's) does not accept medical travel
insurance for payment. They require a US$4000 deposit (as of August 2005) by credit card prior to
treatment. Additional facilities include the Gambles Medical Centre (tel 462-3050; St John's), the Fiennes
Institute (tel 462-0419), St John's Hospital Project Team (tel 562-1115; Cassada Garden) and the Complant
Hospital Project Team (tel 562-1213).

Doctors and hospitals may require immediate cash payment for services, and serious medical problems may
require air ambulance evacuation to the United States. The closest hyperbaric chambers are located in
Guadeloupe, Saba and St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Your home medical program may not provide
payment for medical services outside your home country. Obtaining adequate medical/travel insurance,
including air ambulance coverage, and consulting a physician or travel medicine specialist six to eight
weeks prior to your trip to determine health risks and necessary vaccinations is recommended.

GETTING THERE

Major airlines such as American, US Airways, and British Airways provide service to Antigua's V.C. Bird
International Airport from destinations in North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. Taxis meet every
flight to take vacationers to their choice destination on the island. Despite reduced flights, flying remains a
popular way of reaching Antigua or any island in the Caribbean.
St. John's is a popular and regular destination of choice for cruise lines. Cruise lines offer the appeal of
allowing travelers to experience many different island while on their trip. Vacationers arriving to
Deepwater Harbour in St. John's can take advantage of the cities shopping or beaches for a day or two
before moving on to experience another island. This option appeals to travelers who want to get a small
flavor of more than one island in the Caribbean.
Sailing and yachting is especially popular in Antigua as the island hosts a popular sailing week and regatta
and also boasts challenging terrain on it's eastern shore for the sailing elite. The historic English Harbour is
a fabled destination among sailors and a major reason why sailing and yachting is such a popular means of
traveling to or around Antigua.
Choose a method of travel that appeals to you. Those wishing to experience as much of the island as they
can will choose to fly. For those cruising or sailing to the island, the vacation starts before their arrival.
Either way, Antigua offers beaches and culture for those traveling to its shores.

GETTING AROUND

Antigua's public transportation system lets vacationers leave the driving to someone else. Public
transportation vehicles can be recognized by their license plates, which feature the letters"HA" or"HB."
Taxis are a popular way for travelers to get around the island's 15 miles of surfaced roads. Taxi fares are
regulated by the government, and cabs do not contain meters. Your driver should have a rate card, but you
should negotiate your fare before embarking on your journey.
If you choose to take on the bus line in Antigua, be warned that you might find this method of
transportation a little tricky. Although buses are plentiful and provide an inexpensive means of travel in
Antigua, deciphering the system without a friendly local guide may be time consuming.
Rental cars provide a more independent way to see the island. Most of the rental car agencies in Antigua
are located at the airport or in St. John's. In order to operate a vehicle on the island, you must purchase a
temporary local driver's license, which is good for up to six months and can be obtained at a local police
station or rental agency for around $20(USD).
If you want to avoid the hassle of finding parking and the added cost of gas, then renting a bicycle might be
your best transportation choice. Scooters are also a cost-efficient way to see the island, as they use less gas
than cars.
For traveling Antigua's beautiful waters, yacht and boat charters are available at several of the island's
harbors.
