Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook Founder

I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg has heard many I-found-love-on-Facebook stories through

the years, but my love story is unlike any other. I never knew when I created a Facebook

account to connect with friends, relatives and constituents that I would find one of my

residents who needed a kidney. But there was Carlos Sanchez, like some sort of

cyberspace SOS on my NewsFeed, contacting as many people as he could to find a new

chance at life.

Would I have been his donor without Facebook? We'll never know. But Facebook

allowed me to sit quietly in my office and say to myself, You're up! Answer this call!

It is now a regular occurrence to see folks awaiting a transplant use Facebook to put out

a call to action. And the element of connecting via Facebook has generated interest that

helps us promote health, wellness and organ and tissue donation. Every year nearly

7,000 people in the U.S. die while awaiting a transplant. I know of at least one person

who survived, thanks to Mark Zuckerberg, 26, and his little idea called Facebook

REFLECT AND DISPLAY

Choose one ONE personality featured who has the greatest impact? Why? What determines

this impact?

Each of these texts presents an aspect of the subject person, develops an angle through which

we can appreciate the subject/person.

ANGLE/FOCUS

Introduction

Describe the Introduction and its impact on you.

Firstly, a writer made a generalization of the benefits of Facebook, one of which is the ability

for its users to find love there. However, the writer goes on to say that her account is not a

normal one but a very special and extraordinary one. Indeed, her story is not just a matter of

love or making friends but it is more important and surprising than that. She used Facebook

to save lives. To the writer, this is one of the best social benefits of Facebook.

I had a pleasant surprise when I read the introduction, firstly by the occupation of the writer

next by the extent of what Facebook can do. It was rather unexpected as one would think that

this biography will be on how Facebook helps in social networking, allowing people to make

new friends and many more. However, few would link Facebook with saving lives which was

what the writer did.

Sequence and Plot

How is the information organised? Is there a particular reason for this? What are the

advantages/ disadvantages of using this form of organisation?

The information is represented in a narrative form. A short introduction about Facebook was

given first, including a present phenomenon on Facebook. Next, the writer started on her very

own account and explaining the significance of that later on. A reason for this is that it guides

us with a flow of events and next arriving at the conclusion which is how Facebook saves

lives. With a step-by-step organisation of information, the readers are able to understand her

story and derive the importance of that.

Evidence Used

Some of the evidence used include the patient himself Carlos Sanchez, sending a SOS

message to everyone on Facebook. The writer also included “Every year nearly 7,000 people

in the U.S. die while awaiting a transplant.”

TASKS:

1) Pick any 1 paragraph which you think suffers from a lack of objectivity. Rewrite the

paragraph to present a more accurate viewpoint. Explain the changes you have made.

2) Create a Facebook page for the personality you have chosen. Include all the features of a

Facebook page: Profile, photos, etc. Include at least TWO entries by the personalities relevant

to him/her. This part requires a humourous aspect. (ACE)

1) Paragraph to be rewritten:

It is now a regular occurrence to see folks awaiting a transplant use Facebook to put out a

call to action. And the element of connecting via Facebook has generated interest that

helps us promote health, wellness and organ and tissue donation. Every year nearly 7,000

people in the U.S. die while awaiting a transplant. I know of at least one person who

survived, thanks to Mark Zuckerberg, 26, and his little idea called Facebook.

Rewritten paragraph:

It is true that Facebook causes many to waste a lot of time on unimportant things and

some may be addicted to Facebook. Facebook certainly avoid some from doing more

enjoyable activities than having to sit on their seats and type away for many hours.

However, connecting via Facebook has generated interest that helps us promote health,

wellness and organ and tissue donation. Every year nearly 7,000 people in the U.S. die

while awaiting a transplant. I know of at least one person who survived, thanks to Mark

Zuckerberg, 26, and his little idea called Facebook.
