Landfill Gas Capture And Flare
Fredericton Landfill Gas Capture and Flare
Carbon offset funds enabled the Fredericton Region Solid Waste
Commission (FRSWC) Landfill in New Brunswick to avoid emissions of
methane from entering the atmosphere by capturing and flaring the
landfill gas that is normally produced.
HOW IT WORKS
The project activity is defined as the construction of 26 vertical wells,
installation of 2,100 meters of pipeline and a flare for the purpose of
landfill gas (LFG) capture and methane destruction. A blower creates
the appropriate level of vacuum to draw the LFG from the wells,
through the pipeline to the flare. The flare is an enclosed drum flare
with high destruction efficiency to combust LFG, preventing direct
methane emissions from venting to the atmosphere.
CARBON OFFSETS MADE IT HAPPEN
Without offset funds the financial payback for this installation would
not have been viable and the landfill would continue to emit methane,
which has the global warming potential of over 20 times that of carbon
dioxide, into the atmosphere. Use of these technologies is not common
practice and yields savings in GHG emissions compared to the
traditional approach.
OTHER BENEFITS OF THE INSTALLATION
Beyond the direct climate benefits, the installation of the FRSWC
Landfill Gas Capture and Flare project will reduce the risk of landfill
fires or explosions along with odours associated with traditional
landfills.
