Job title:                     Head of Biology

Responsible to:                The Headmistress in all matters and to the Deputy Head and Deputy Head
                               (Curriculum) on day to day issues; to the Head of Science on matters
                               relating to the whole Science department

Objectives of the post :
    To provide leadership in and be responsible for the management of the Biology Department
    To determine the philosophy of the department
    To be responsible for the teaching, assessment and development of Biology throughout the
       school
    To interact on a professional level with colleagues and to seek to establish and maintain
       productive relationships with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning in the
       school.
    To contribute expertise, enthusiasm and talents in order to develop each girl’s full potential
       within the ethos of the school.
    To ensure that girls are prepared effectively for public examinations where applicable

Key areas of responsibility:

Leadership and administration of the department
    To draw up and update annually a departmental development plan which reflects the aims of
      the school development plan
    To work with other members of the department to produce appropriate syllabuses, materials
      and schemes of work and an up-to-date departmental handbook.
    To review regularly the department’s success in meeting its aims and objectives
    To ensure the provision of appropriate textbooks and materials
    To ensure the best use of the department's resources and the proper maintenance of materials
      and equipment
    To advise the Headmistress on the aims and policies of the department and the resources
      required to implement them.
    To allocate teaching responsibilities, bearing in mind the abilities, experience and developmental
      needs of members of the department
    To develop a departmental assessment policy and to co-ordinate standards of marking and
      assessment within the department
    To ensure that the departmental teaching areas are attractive in appearance and conducive to
      stimulating an interest in the subject
    To ensure that Health and Safety regulations are observed within the department, keeping the
      Headmistress informed of any changes which may affect the department

Leadership of staff
    To contribute to the Professional Review programme and to support members of the
      department in their professional development
    To direct the work of ancillary staff who support the work of the department
    To recognise any areas of difficulty that may arise with members of the department and to be
      supportive and constructive in finding a solution.
    To organise departmental meetings to discuss the work of the department and the
      implementation of departmental and school policies.
    To ensure that all the department follow departmental schemes of work
    To ensure that expectations of standards are clearly understood by all members of the
      department so that pupils are stimulated and challenged
    To play a role in the appointment of new members of the department
    To contribute to the induction of new members of staff as required

Teaching
    To keep abreast of and respond to developments within the whole field of education which may
       have implications for the teaching of Biology and the school's curriculum
    To keep an overview of work being covered at primary level to ensure that the Year 7 curriculum
       remains challenging
    To contribute to the teaching of the Biology department throughout the school.
    To ensure, as far as is practicable, the continuity of teaching of any girls whose teacher is not
       available
    To organise educational visits, activities and societies as appropriate

Whole school responsibilities
   To contribute towards the marketing of the school by contributing to school Open Days and
      other appropriate occasions
   To organise the department's contribution at school functions where appropriate
   To participate in appropriate meetings and functions with colleagues and parents
   To contribute to meetings and discussions necessary to co-ordinate the work of the department
      and integrate this into the work of the school as a whole.
   To liaise with other Heads of Departments.
   To submit reports and recommendations to the Head and other staff as requested
   To carry out other associated duties as are reasonably assigned by the Head or other appropriate
      senior member of staff.

These responsibilities may be subject to review from time to time and amended after discussion to
reflect changing circumstances

Applicable contract terms and duties
    This job description is to be carried out in accordance with The Queen’s School Contract of
       Employment within the range of duties set out in that document, so far as is relevant to the
       postholder’s title and salary grade. The postholder will be required to take part in the
       professional review programme as a mentee and may be asked to be a mentor.
