EUROPEAN LEGAL STUDIES 2
(Half-option - dissertation)
Convenor: Dr Jörg Fedtke
This course is a half-option for final year students designed mainly to provide a follow-up
to European Legal Studies 1. It is open to students with a good working knowledge of
French, German, Italian or Spanish law who wish to research a comparative topic of their
choice. ELS 2 is also open to M100 students who meet these requirements.
The course consists of a dissertation of about 7,000 words on a comparative subject
involving one of the four jurisdictions set out above. For students who have spent the
previous year abroad, this should ideally draw on the results of their studies there. The
subject of the dissertation is chosen in consultation with the course convenor. There will
be a series of seminars to discuss problems of comparative methodology and to assist
students in their choice of topics. The seminars are followed up by one-to-one meetings.
