Web Development

Developing and maintaining a basic

school web site.

Creating the Web

 Pick a location on the local computer (or

network location) where your web will

reside.

 Create and name the folder.

New Web Wizard

1. Click File>New>Page or Web

2. A window appears for New Page Or Web. Choose “One

Page Webs”

3. Browse to your Web folder, open it.

4. Click OK in the creation wizard, after checking that your

path is correct

Setting up the Theme

1. Click>Format>Theme

2. Make sure “Vivid Colors” “Apply using CSS” and other

options are checked (assuming you want them)

3. Click the “All Pages” radio button

1. Note that pages that have had themes applied to them with

“selected page” are NOT effected by any “All pages” theme

you apply. The theme must be removed from the “Selected

page” to force the global theme to be active.

4. Click OK and answer the dialogue as the wizard applies the

theme.

Pick a base theme and copy it

1. Click Format>Theme

2. Choose “Blank”

3. Click Modify

4. Click Save As…

5. Name your theme

Modify the base

 Things you may want to change in your

theme:

 Color schemes – fonts, highlighting, bold and

underlined fonts for different text types

 Bullet and Number graphics

 Banner and wallpaper graphics

 Line graphics

 Paragraph styles

Titles and Navigation

 A page’s title is used to describe the page in many

places on your web; in the banner (when using

Themes), in the navigation view, in auto generated

shortcuts, etc.

 When a new page is created, make sure it is

properly titled BEFORE saving it - this will save

you a lot of trouble.

 To change a page’s title, Click Folder on the views

menu, and right click the page name.

Navigation View

 Click “Navigation” in the views menu

 Drag pages from the list onto the diagram

and arrange them in a logical, flowchart style

fashion.

 Pages on the navigation diagram will show

up in the same order on hyperlink bars, in

shared border navigation menus, and Table

of Contents/Site maps.

Create the EPSS page

 Open or create your EPSS page

 Click Insert>File

 Change the file type to All (*.*)

 Select your EPSS document

 Click Ok

Add and configure shared

borders

 Click Format>Shared Borders

 Select All Pages

 Select the desired location for the border

 Check the “navigation buttons” box.

 Note: If the navigation button box is grayed out,

the most likely cause is that the current page

does not exist in the navigation diagram. Add

the page in the navigation view.

Create the Report Card page

 Open or create your Report Card page

 Click Insert>File

 Change the file type to All (*.*)

 Select your Report Card document

 Click Ok

Create the event calendar

 Run Microsoft Outlook 2000 (or 2002) to create the calendar

 Open the Calendars folder

 Click File>NEW>Folder

 Choose Appointment Items as “Folder contains”

 Name the new Calendar (I.e. IHS Event Calendar)

 Enter Calendar items

 With the proper calendar highlighted click File>Save As Web Page

 Choose a location for your calendar

 Outlook creates a folder in that location, by the name you chose.

 Right click the folder

 Click Copy

 In the FOLDERS view in Frontpage, right click a blank space and

click PASTE

 Add the .html page named after your calendar from the folder you

just copied to the navigation diagram.

Create the Home Page

 Decide on content for Home Page

 Maintain content and archive of content

Publishing

 For Moriarty

 Simply copy the web folder to \\Leo\Pub$

 Other Forms of Publication

 Find out whether your ISP or the server you are

publishing to uses http or ftp publishing, and

whether they use Frontpage extensions or not.

 Consult the Help wizard for details on publishing

to various sources.

Reports

 Use the Reports view to see ways to optimize

your page, fix broken hyperlinks, and get

general statistics on your web site.

Tasks

 Use the Tasks view to keep track of the work

on your site.
