Climate Narrative for Cashmere Mountain Soil Survey, Washington.

Prepared by the Natural Resources Conservation Service National Water and Climate Center, Portland,
Oregon.

Climate Tables are created from climate stations Leavenworth 3 S, Stehekin 3 NW, Stevens Pass and
Wenatchee, Washington

Thunderstorm days, relative humidity, percent sunshine, and wind information are estimated from First
Order station Yakima, Washington.

Table 1 gives data on temperature and precipitation for the survey area as recorded at these stations
in the period 1961 to 1990. Table 2 shows probable dates of the first freeze in fall and the last
freeze in spring. Table 3 provides data on the length of the growing season. For precipitation and
temperature extremes, full periods of record were used, which were: 1948 to 1998 at Leavenworth; 1931
to 1998 at Stehekin and Wenatchee; and 1951 to 1994 at Stevens Pass.

In winter, average temperatures are: 27.9, 30.2, 25.0, and 31.9 degrees F at Leavenworth, Stehekin,
Stevens Pass and Wenatchee, respectively. Winter average daily minimum temperatures are 19.3, 25.0,
20.1 and 25.2 degrees at these four locations. The lowest temperatures on record include: -36 at
Leavenworth on December 30, 1968; -21 at Stehekin on December 30, 1968; -25 at Stevens Pass on December
31, 1968; and -19 at Wenatchee on December 30, 1968.

In summer, average temperatures are: 67.1 degrees at Leavenworth, 66.1 degrees at Stehekin, 53.3 at
Stevens Pass and 71.8 at Wenatchee. Average daily maximum temperatures in summer are: 85.4, 80.6, 62.7
and 85.7 degrees, respectively. The highest temperatures ever recorded were: 108 at Leavenworth on
August 16, 1967; 107 at Stehekin on July 28, 1998; 91 at Stevens Pass on June 17, 1961; and 110 at
Wenatchee on July 17, 1941.

Growing degree days are shown in Table 1. They are equivalent to "heat units". During the month,
growing degree days accumulate by the amount that the average temperature each day exceeds a base
temperature (40 degrees F). The normal monthly accumulation is used to schedule single or successive
plantings of a crop between the last freeze in spring and the first freeze in fall.

Average annual precipitation over this soil survey region shows a very strong gradient from very wet
and snowy conditions along the Cascade crest to less than 10 inches in far eastern sections near
Wenatchee. New mean annual precipitation maps derived using the PRISM modeling system indicate that
most of this area receives between 25 and 50 inches of precipitation annually, except for areas near
the Cascade crest, which get between 50 and 90 inches, and lowest elevations, which receive between 8
and 15 inches. At these four reporting locations average annual precipitation decreases from 83.14
inches at Stevens Pass to 35.50 inches at Stehekin, to 25.54 inches at Leavenworth, and just 8.82
inches at Wenatchee. At lower elevations, the growing season typically runs from May through
September, and during this period usually only 10 to 20 percent of average annual precipitation falls.

The heaviest 1-day precipitation amounts during the respective periods of record were: 3.60 inches at
Leavenworth on January 9, 1990; 6.60 inches at Stehekin on February 16, 1949; 10.94 inches at Stevens
Pass on November 12, 1989; and 2.72 inches at Wenatchee on August 18, 1975. Thunderstorms occur on
about 7 days each year, and most occur in June, July or August.

Average annual snowfall also is largely a function of elevation and location. Heaviest snowfall occurs
along the crest of the Cascades, and decreases eastward. Average snowfall at these four locations is
485.2 inches at Stevens Pass, 130.1 inches at Stehekin, 99.9 inches at Leavenworth, and 27.0 inches at
Wenatchee. The greatest snow depths at any one time during the periods of record were: 93 inches at
Leavenworth, recorded on February 23, 1969; 93 inches at Stehekin, recorded on March 12, 1951; 219
inches at Stevens Pass, recorded on March 9, 1956; and 31 inches at Wenatchee, recorded on January 9,
1993. On average, about 212 days per year have at least 1 inch of snow on the ground at Stevens Pass.
This declines to 111 days per year at Stehekin, 90 days at Leavenworth, and 42 days at Wenatchee. The
heaviest 1-day snowfalls on record are: 28.0 inches at Leavenworth, recorded on December 27, 1965;
44.0 inches at Stehekin, recorded on January 21, 1935; 45.0 inches at Stevens Pass, recorded on January
2, 1965; and 17.7 inches at Wenatchee, recorded on December 9, 1971.

Average relative humidities, like most other weather elements, are quite variable across this region.
Being east of the Cascade crest, most of the region has much drier air than western Washington. In
general, winter humidities in mid-afternoon range from about 70 percent in the lowest valleys to 60
percent on the middle slopes. In the summer, afternoon humidities typically range from 25 percent in
lower elevations to around 40 percent near the Cascade crest. Humidities are typically higher at night
as temperatures cool, and the average at dawn is about 85 percent in the winter and around 70 percent
in the summer. The sun shines around 75 percent of the time in summer in lower elevations, and around
60 percent near the Cascade crest. In the winter, these percentages decrease to around 30 percent in
lower elevations and around 20 percent over higher, western terrain. The prevailing wind is from the
south, except from the north during the winter, and from the west or southwest in April. Average wind
speed is highest, around 10 miles per hour, in April. Winds are highly affected by local terrain, with
mean winds typically higher over highest terrain.

    * A growing degree day is a unit of heat available for plant growth. It can be calculated by adding the maximum
and minumum daily temperatures, dividing the sum by 2, and subtracting the temperature below which growth is minimal
for the principal crops in the area (40 degrees. F)

    * A growing degree day is a unit of heat available for plant growth. It can be calculated by adding the maximum
and minumum daily temperatures, dividing the sum by 2, and subtracting the temperature below which growth is minimal
for the principal crops in the area (40 degrees. F)
