							USING LIQUID NITROGEN SAFELY within UNIVERSITIES e-Learning course
Everyone who uses, handles or stores cryogenic liquids must know and understand the properties of liquids they are using, the hazards associated with their use and basic safe working procedures and, the need to carry out risk assessments. The e-learning package on Using Liquid Nitrogen within Universities consists of several modules which guide the learner through the safe working practices. It can be completed at the learners own pace. This course is an essential part of the training for those who decant or work with liquid nitrogen at UCL. Candidates may take this course as a stand-alone module. However this e-learning course MUST be successfully completed prior to attending the Safe Decanting of Liquid Nitrogen practical workshop. See link for details:www.ucl.ac.uk/efd/safety_services_www/training/publicity/general/decant_liquid_nitrogen FOR: Staff and postgraduate students who have not received training before and are required to have basic understanding of using liquid nitrogen or, for those who need refresher training. To understand the dangers and how to work safely with liquid nitrogen. Introduction and properties of liquid nitrogen; the hazards posed by uncontrolled release of pressure; the hazards of asphyxia; cryogenic vessels; safe handling and storage of cryogenic vessels; safe decanting of liquid nitrogen As this is web based the learner can access the course as and when they wish within one month of registration. There is no ‘classroom’ element to the training. 1. Safety Services will issue a course code to the candidate when their application to take the e-Learning course has been accepted. 2. Candidates are expected to complete the course within a month. 3. A Certificate of Completion and a workbook will be sent to candidates who have scored more than 75% correct answers in the e-Learning course. 4. £50.00 administration fee will be charged to the applicant who does not take the e-Learning course after a course code had been given to them. 5. A booking form must be submitted if you wish to attend the practical session, Safe Decanting of Liquid Nitrogen practical workshop.
