I See Myself as A Math Teacher

Every subject contains information necessary to become a functional member of our

society. Mathematics is no longer just a subject taken by the elite. Now it has a right become a

staple in our education systems even though it is not appreciated by many students. I decided to

become a math teacher because I want to help people become open to learning math by

understanding what math is all about. Simply, math is just about solving problems. That is why I

want to become a math teacher because math desperately needs to be explained.

Choosing to be a math major was not that big of a decision for me. When we reached into

the challenging of math, all my classmates grades were dropping, I still maintained the A’s. After

couple of months learning math, I noticed I would be doing something with math. As being

college student, I had heard many students said: “what does problem solving have to do with

math in school?” I wanted to come up and explain to them what math is all about but I did not

have the courageous. Everybody uses math whether they realize it or not. Shoppers use math to

calculate change, tax, and sales prices. Cook use math to modify the amount a recipe will make.

Vacationers use math to find time of arrivals and departures to plan their trips. Even homeowners

use math to determine the cost of materials when doing projects. Everyone must understand how
to use math correctly because it determines success of one’s life. That’s why I want to become a

math teacher badly so I can explain how math is so important.

Career goals are extremely important in my life. For years before college decisions, my

career goal has always been to be a high school math teacher. As time passes by and the material

became more challenging, my decision become vary. I enjoyed the challenge and wanted to go

beyond high school teaching. After my first semester at East Field College, the thought of setting

my goal further to a college professor came to my mind. I do not have a particular individual that

influenced my decision. However, my mother led me with advice and motivation. For example,

she advised me to go in as a mathematics education major, and if I want to go beyond that with

more schooling in the future.

Although other ideas have gone through my mind but mathematics has always

stayed on top. Through high school I was a math tutor, I had helped many students in different

grades. It was a life changing experience, not only helping them but it was amazing how much I

can learn to become a math teacher.

I am fond with math, because a simple unsolved problem invites me to crack it. I didn’t

see me as a second year college student; I saw a person with a mysterious problem in his life that

is ready to be cracked. I can hear myself excited and cheerful about discovering a new answer to

a question I have always had. I fell in love with math because I can see, hear, and dream about it

every day. Therefore there is no doubt in my mind that I want to live my life as a mathematics

teacher.
