    Introduction

    • The Next Generation Access (NGA) Pilot covers the provision of High Speed
      Access Connections over FTTH (Fibre to the Home) and FTTC (Fibre to The
      Cabinet) Technologies.

    • The FTTH Pilot Take place in Wexford and Sandyford Exchange Areas (covering up
      to 8,000 Homes).

    • The FTTC Pilot Take place in Dundrum and Priory Park Exchange Area (covering
      up to 8,000 Homes).

    • This presentation briefly reviews the pilot technologies and outlines the eircom
      Wholesale NGA pilot products based on the different platforms.

    • These slides are from presentations given to Industry as part of communicating the
      eircom Wholesale product offerings.

    • As well as the product proposals the product pricing is also included in each
      section.*

      technologies


    • The technology imperative – Our market is a ‘technology’ taker, eventually international
      vendor support for legacy copper, 2G and even 3G, networks will diminish

    An open access FTTH Trial gives us an opportunity,
    individually and collectively, to get to grips with some of
    these issues …not in the abstract but in a real environment
    • Develop industry understanding of the technical issues associated with FTTH/FTTC in
      particular our understanding of the actual costs – Can we do better than the desktop
      modelling and research suggests?
    • Develop our understanding of customer interest - What services are perceived to
      have value by customers - is there a willingness to pay a premium for the next-
      generation services?
    • Develop and test a trial NGA product portfolio , both passive and active, and value
      added services (e.g.Multi-cast).
    • Develop and test sales and customer management processes to support both
      wholesale (and retail) services
    • Develop fulfilment and assurance processes and systems to support NGA services
    • Develop our understanding of the role of OTT providers – can we work in partnership?

FIBRE TO THE HOME
     FTTH Network Architecture
     “Fibre to the Home” (FTTH) is defined as a communications architecture in which the connection to
     the customer’s premises is Optical Fibre..

     The technology that will be provided by eircom for the FTTH (Fibre to the Home) Pilot is a GPON
     Gigabit-enabled Passive Optical Network (PON) platform.

     This combines a passive fibre infrastructure with an active signals overlay. The passive illustrates
     the characteristics that the optical fibre infrastructure has no power requirements or active
     electronic parts once the signal is going through the network. The GPON architecture also
     facilitates a point to multipoint fibre network architecture using optical splitters to split the optical
     signal that is used in the solution.

     The fibre infrastructure planned by eircom is a point-to-multipoint fibre to the premises network
     architecture in which a passive optical splitter (located ijn a kerbside cabinet) is used to enable a
     single optical fibre from the exchange to serve up to 32 customers premises.

     There are 3 main components in a GPON platform (as well as the access fibre) :
         – A GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) which performs the function of a network concentrator.
         – A Feeder Fibre that connects an OLT to an Optical Splitter in a Kerbside cabinet.
         – A splitter which enables a single fibre (The Feeder Fibre) from the exchange to be shared
            among number of customers.
         – An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) which serves a single customer premises, converting optical
           signals to electrical signals that can be used within the customer premises.

 FTTC Network Architecture

     A FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) network topology involves the provision of high speed connections
     from the local exchange over feeder fibres to DSLAMs in kerbside cabinets. The DSLAMs (Digital
     Subscriber Line Access Multiplexor) can deliver high speed access connections to customers over
     the copper network using VDSL2 Technology (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2).

     The shorter copper connections means that greater broadband speeds can be achieved using the
     VDSL2 technology compared to other types of DSL connections on a longer copper route.
     The combination of the high-speed fibre connection to the DSLAM in the kerbside cabinet and the
     high speed VDSL2 connection over the copper network can result in faster broadband speeds
     providing the capability for enhanced IP Services including video, voice, internet and IPTV.

     The main components of an FTTC network connection are:
     • A fibre connection between the local exchange and kerbside cabinet that supports a high-speed
       link to a DSLAM.
     • A DSLAM installation in the kerbside cabinet which is connected by a high-speed link back to the
       local exchange.
     • An access connection over the Copper Network from the DSLAM to the customer premises
       which terminates on a VDSL2 Modem.

 FUA Network Architecture

     • The Fibre Unbundled Access Product provides an enhanced broadband
       access service, between the Service Termination Point (STP) at the end-
       user’s premises and a Wholesale Ethernet Interconnect Link (WEIL) at
       an Operator’s nominated Point of Handover (POH), within the local
       exchange area. It is intended to support a mix of time sensitive and high
       volume applications including voice, general entertainment (including
       Broadcast TV), and high speed Internet.

     • The product is designed to use both copper and fibre as the physical
       access methodology. The product supports traffic-based Class of
       Service.
