Among the many great things about the food service
industry is that professional chefs and cooks are
always in demand. If you know how to cook
delicious meals, it is already an advantage if you
are seeking to enter the industry. However, if you are
looking for personal chef careers, knowing how to
cook well is not enough.
A personal chef is someone who comes to the
home of the clients and prepares their meals,
usually a week or two weeks worth, for the clients to reheat when they come home from work. The term is
often confused with a private chef, for they both involve serving and preparing for a private employer and his
family.
The demand for personal chef careers has significantly increased over the past few years and it is expected
to double in the next six years according to the US Personal Chef Association. The hectic lifestyle and the
increasing awareness to eat healthy foods have greatly contributed to this demand. For chefs out there, this
simply means that there is a big opportunity that is available for those who want to take a different path in the
food service industry.
Being a personal chef is something that should be seriously considered. It is far different from the exciting
world of restaurant cooking. It is more laidback, yet it entails great planning, much expertise, and hard work
and dedication. It requires the best of skills from a chef, for more often than not, the chef works alone. He
buys the ingredients for the meals, do the chopping and cutting, cooks the food, washes the utensils, and
cleans the kitchen. For some, it is like starting from scratch. For others, it is a test of patience and skill.
To be successful as a personal chef, it is important that you have acquired basic skills in culinary arts. Most
chefs have degree in the said field. If you do not have one, you may want to consider entering culinary school
or attending various vocational trainings and seminars. More importantly, significant experience in the field is
needed. If you want to go through this path, gain some experience first. As with any delicious meal,
preparation is the key to become a successful professional personal chef.
