A Note on Virtual Machines
Command Alkon does not explicitly test or certify products running in a VMware or similar
virtualization platform environments. Command Alkon applications running in a virtual environment
are supported as long as the OS running in the virtual machine is certified by Command Alkon (see
Command Alkon Platform Availability Matrix). However, if Command Alkon is unable to reproduce
an issue within the virtual environment, the customer will be asked to reproduce the problem running
natively on the certified OS, without the use of VMware or similar virtualization platform.

Database Server(s)
Requirements for database servers are generally based on the number of users. For estimation
purposes, a “user” is any person or device that will be able to access the database. This list includes
LAN users, WAN users, Comm servers, print servers, etc.
The Database can be deployed on a single server or on multiple servers to provide scalability, high
availability, failover and/or disaster recovery options. Please consult with a Command Alkon
representative to discuss the solution best for you.

                              2-6 Users 7-20 Users 20-40 Users 40-60 Users

Processor(s) Single Dual Dual Dual Processor
                            Processor Processors Processors 3.0+GHz Xeon

Xeon Xeon Xeon Itanium- 2 or
                                                                                  AMD OPTERON
Memory (RAM) 2+ GB RAM 4+ GB RAM 4+ GB RAM 8+ GB RAM

Storage
SATA or SCSI, multiple drives, multiple RAID enabled storage for data security, reliability and
performance. A SAN solution could also be implemented. Suggested configurations are provided
below:
Very Basic: 3-30+GB drives, RAID 1 array (1-5 user systems only)
Basic: (5 drives) 2-30+GB drives, RAID 1 array for OS and database files (2 partitions)
3-70+GB drives, RAID 5 array for the data (1 partition)
Medium: (7d) Add 2-30+GB drives, RAID 5 array for database application (two)
Advanced: (9d) Add 2-70+GB drives, RAID 5 array for backups/transactions (two)
SAN: Please consult with a Command Alkon representative for configuration.
Note: SAN solutions are highly recommended. They have dropped in price significantly and are no
longer options for large corporations only.
Regardless of your configuration, CAI strongly recommends using hot-swappable SCSI drives, as well
as keeping multiple replacement drives on site. CAI will work with you to develop a specification that
meets your individual needs.

Operating System
15B

Microsoft Windows 2008 / 2003 Server, Standard or Enterprise Server Edition (32 or 64 -bit).
Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 / 2003. Please consult with Command Alkon Representative
      for configuration.

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 2000 Server for Hot Fixes in 2005, and will stop critical fixes in
March 2007. All customers should consider Windows Server 2008 for new server installations and
upgrades.
Note: UNIX and LINUX platforms for Oracle database servers have been successfully implemented
with COMMANDseries; however, the customer must assume full responsibility for
      supporting/maintaining the operating system.

Database
16B

      Oracle 11g, 10g R2 (CS08)
Note: It is highly recommended that all Oracle clients match the version and patch level of the
            database server.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise or Standard Editions CS08 2.8 or higher
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (sp3) Enterprise or Standard Editions (All CS08 Versions)

Network Cards:
17B

RECOMMENDED: 1000Mbs, multiple NIC cards for redundancy/segmentation. 1Gigabyte switch
for intraconnection between Oracle RAC nodes.

Miscellaneous
23B

          License Counts
Oracle and SQL licenses are based on either the number of named users (not concurrent connections)
or the number or processors. The minimum user count for purchase is 5 users. Be sure to include all
users (LAN and remote) as well as communication server(s) and any other non-human devices
accessing the data.
Any Windows Server requires a Microsoft CAL(Client Access Licenses) for connection to shared
resources, i.e. printers, shared folders, etc.

          Domain Controllers
Many networks require a Primary Domain Controller (PDC); this server is used to manage the
network. In smaller systems the PDC also functions as the COMMANDseries server, but in larger
networks a dedicated PDC may be required.
The database server should be a dedicated server as well, and not used to run other applications or act as
the domain controller unless this has been discussed with the Command Alkon Technical Services
team. These operations will slow the overall performance of the database/COMMANDseries by
placing additional demands on the server.

Citrix
2B

If you plan to implement via Citrix, you must determine the number/size of Citrix servers as well. For
Citrix servers, the only relevant number is the total number of users who will be logged on to the Citrix
server.
Note: These specifications are for COMMANDseries only. If additional applications are to be
distributed via Citrix, additional memory, processors and/or bandwidth will be required.

Servers
24B

                         up to 10 Users 10 to 30 Users 30 to 50 Users Additional 25
                                                                                           Users

         Servers 1 Server 1 Server 2 Servers 1 Additional
                                                                                      Server
Processor Single 2.0 GHz Dual Xeon Dual Xeon Dual Xeon
Xeon processor processors of 2.0 processors of 2.0 processors of 2.0
GHz or better GHz or better GHz or better
                        (Dual processor
                        Recommended)
Memory (RAM) Recommended: 200MB/User Minimum: 100MB/User

Command Alkon Infrastructure Guide Page 5 of 30 29-Sep-11
Note: The above values are the minimum requirements. Faster processors will result in better
performance. CAI does not recommend more than 2 processors per Citrix Server.

Bandwidth
25B

CIR rates of 20k- 30k per COMMANDseries user are required for adequate performance. Each
additional user at each location requires an additional 20k-30k of bandwidth.
Note: This is a minimum requirement, and does not consider any 3rd party application bandwidth
      requirements.

Storage (Hard Drives)
26B

Standard setup: 2 drive RAID array
Additional spare drives can be included for redundancy

Operating System
27B

Choose one of the options below:
Microsoft Windows 2003/2008 Server Standard or Enterprise
***Citrix XenApp cannot be installed on a Domain Controller. Per Microsoft’s recommendation,
Microsoft TS License Server should reside on a Domain controller and not on one of the members of
the Citrix Farm.

Citrix XenApp Software
28B

XenAppCitrix Access Essentials – for systems with 1 server (1-20 users) that do not require load
balancing. Citrix Access Essentials is licensed on a named user basis (not concurrent connections).
Thus, licenses should be calculated based upon the total number of users. The minimum user
count for purchase is 5 users.
XenApp Citrix XenApp, Advanced Edition – for multi-server Citrix systems; includes load
balancing between multiple servers (see Notes)
XenAppCitrix XenApp, Enterprise Edition – for large corporate deployments requiring
management of multiple farms and/or additional management tools.

Terminal Services Licensing
29B

Terminal Server role must be activated on the Citrix server for XenApp to operate. The exact licensing
model required will depend upon the operating system used:
Windows 2003/2008 Servers: every Citrix client must have a TS-CAL.
*** CAI recommends purchasing per-user TS-CALS, rather than per-device TS- CALS.

Network Cards (NIC)
30B

Required: 1-100+MB/S Server NIC. More may be required depending on network configuration.
Recommended: 1GB/S, Dual/ Multiple Server NICs for segmentation and redundancy

Command Alkon Infrastructure Guide Page 6 of 30 29-Sep-11
Data Backup
31B

Command Alkon does not provide support services for any specific backup software applications but
can assist in developing a disaster recovery plan.

Power Supply:
3B

We recommend a redundant power supply and a UPS for reliability/ safety.

Other
34B

A DVD Drive, Keyboard, Monitor, Floppy Drive, and Mouse are required. An I/O switchbox is
recommended.

Technical Support Services:
35B

The support services listed below provides reactive telephone support to issues that may arise during
your business operations. Complete descriptions of the services provided can be obtained by contacting
your salesman or Command Alkon’s Technical Services.
Operating System Support Services (PS-OS): Telephone support services for the operating systems
listed above under our Operating System Support Service.
Citrix XenApp Support Services (PS-CPS): Telephone support services for the Citrix XenApp
software listed above as it is used with COMMANDseries. Support for other applications (i.e.
email and office applications) is not provided by Command Alkon.

Miscellaneous
36B

        License Counts:
XenApp uses concurrent licensing. Thus, more workstations can be configured to connect to a
XenApp server than licenses available. However, only the purchased number of users will be allowed
to connect at any one time.
Citrix Access Essentials is licensed on a named user basis (not concurrent connections). Thus,
licenses should be calculated based upon the total number of users. The minimum user count for
      purchase is 5 users.
The customer should make sure that enough licenses are available to allow for administrative
connections, Command Alkon support personnel, and any 3rd party vendors that may be accessing
Citrix. (see TS-CAL note below)

        Load Balancing:
Requires XenApp Advanced or Enterprise editions –subtract one user for each additional server that
will be used in a load balancing environment (Ex: 4 servers and 55 users equals 59 licenses).

        Windows
Windows Server 2003 / 2008 servers running XenApp does NOT support SERIAL dial up RDP or ICA
connections directly attached to the server.

Command Alkon Infrastructure Guide Page 7 of 30 29-Sep-11
Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 2000 Server for Hot Fixes in 2005, and stopped critical
fixes in March 2007. All customers should consider Windows Server 2008 for new server
        installations and upgrades.

Operating System Support Services (PS-OS): Command Alkon offers telephone support services for
the operating systems listed under our Operating System Support Services.

Definitions/Notes:
42B

Comm Server: Communications with batch panels, signaling units and other devices are
managed through a Comm Server or multiple servers. May also include processes for automated
data imports/ exports, inventory updates, etc.

Command Alkon Infrastructure Guide Page 10 of 30 29-Sep-11
Comm Manager: Each communication process is managed by a Comm Manager. For example,
the communications with plant 3’s Spectrum batch panel will be assigned to a specific Comm
Manager. This manager contains all of the necessary information to communicate with the batch
panel (i.e., phone number, IP address, etc.)
Number of Servers/Managers: The type of communications will dictate the number of Comm
Servers and Comm Managers required. Multiple Comm Managers can be placed on one Comm
Server. However, multiple servers may be required to handle all of the communications. See a
Command Alkon Representative for assistance with this configuration.
Com Ports: CMDseries supports both standard com ports as well as ports added via a DIGI PCI
card. Additional communications ports are normally required to communicate with modems and
    scales.

                               models are not supported

DIGI International
4B

Many Digi products can be used to provide additional COM ports for a system. CAI has found that
Digi’s drivers are better than other vendors’ and we only recommend and support their models. The
correct Digi Realport depends on the application of the device, so it is not possible to be more specific
at this time than giving a list of models that will work for most Signaling, Bar Code Readers, RFID
devices, Scale, and Batch Panel interfaces.

        Port Servers:
Digi One SP- Great for single port applications and it includes a single DB-9.
      Digi PortServer TS 1 MEI
Digi PortServer TS W MEI Wireless models with WEP
      Digi One RealPort
Digi TS H (1, 2 &4 Ports) This model handle extreme temperatures (-35C to +70C) well.
There are two possibilities of you need a solution that supports both RS-232 and SNMP:
Digi One TS W RJ-45 – device server
      Digi PortServer TS 2/4 MEI
International clients may also have access to two other models:
      Digi Acceleport Xp Universal PCI
      Digi Acceleport Xr 920
Note: Connectors and cables may be required to match the model purchased.

Modems
45B

Recommended: MultiTech 2834ZDX
Other modems may require additional time for configuration and testing to insure proper performance.

Remote Access
CAI Remote Support requires a TCP/IP connection over the internet. VPN Solution (Cisco, Intel,
Microsoft) Client software must be supplied by customer to CAI
Tools: VNC (Ultra, Real, etc.) PCAnywhere, ICA, RDP, and/or a combination of the above.
Notes: It is recommended that FAT/LAN clients have the ability to be supported remotely. The above
tools (where applicable) may be used for support to the client workstations as well.
CAI can dial-up via analog phone service and modems, but this is a very slow and inefficient support
model in a graphical world.

Real Time Controllers
All COMMANDbatch systems have a Real Time Controller (RTC), a processing unit that handles the
math processing, calculating such things as batch targets and feed cutoffs, and sends that information to
the COMMANDbatch PC. In some installations, the RTC is a small physical unit (often referred to as
a “brick”). More recent versions of COMMANDbatch support a virtual RTV (vRTC), a virtual RTC
image installed on the COMMANDbatch PC that communicates with COMMANDbatch via a virtual
network adapter. Hardware requirements depend on the type of RTC being deployed.
Note: Only PCs supplied or approved by Command Alkon can be used for COMMANDbatch
      vRTC.

Anti-Virus Disclaimer
It is your company’s responsibility to install and update anti-virus software. Any services performed by
Command Alkon to correct problems caused by incorrect installation/updating of anti-virus software
can be billed to your company at the Command Alkon hourly service rate.
Anti-virus software should also be configured to allow Command Alkon products to write to the
directories controlled by COMMANDbatch and Microsoft SQL Server. For performance reasons, we
ask that anti-virus software not scan these directories unless special measures are taken to optimize the
anti-virus scanning rules. Anti-virus software must also allow .bat, .cmd, and .js (javascript) files to run.
In addition, anti-virus software should not block the following ports used by COMMANDbatch and
other Command Alkon products.
