A brief history of the “President’s Message to Congress:”
        The State of the Union Address has been a longstanding tradition in our country, beginning with President
Washington. Historically, the message was shared with the public via newspaper, until 1923, when President Coolidge
delivered the annual address over the radio. President Franklin Roosevelt was the first to use the term “State of the
Union” in 1935 and President Truman delivered the first televised address in 1947.
        Assignment:
  1.) You are to either watch or read President Obama’s 2011 State of the Union Address.
  2.) You are to select one topic from his address (for example, Foreign policy and Health Care).
  3.) You are to summarize the topic (provide the main idea(s) and any relevant statistics / facts).
 4.) You are to provide a reaction to the topic (Why did you select this topic? How does this topic impact the nation &
your personal life & your future? Do you agree with the President’s position, why/why not?).
