As the United States entered the 1950’s we had a new President (Eisenhower), and
        S
a new policy on how to deal with the Soviet Union (the “New Look” Foreign Policy).

          Cold War tensions continued and began to spread into areas other
             than Europe and Asia. The Middle East and Latin America
                    became Cold War hotspots during the 1950’s.

Cooperative Learning Activity ■
Task: Imagine your group is a network news team.
    Your job is to prepare a report on a Cold War event of the 1950’s and early
      1960’s.
    Your roles will include an anchor, a reporter, and interviewee, and an expert
      to analyze the situation.
    Your group will be subject matter experts on your specific topic.
    Make sure your information is detailed and accurate, as you will be providing
      the class information that they will need to complete this unit!

Topics:

      Iran             Guatemala        Geneva Summit              Egypt
     Sputnik            Hungary          U-2 Incident        (Suez Canal Crisis)

Sequence:
    Identify the “Conflict/Situation” and the “U.S. Response” for your assigned
     topic.
         o Fill in the details on the “Cold War Spreads Around the World”
            Graphic Organizer.
    Prepare a script of what will be said during your 2-3 minute news broadcast.
         o Your script will be collected.
    Create a SINGLE PowerPoint slide with pictures, graphs/charts and (or)
     other visual images to enhance your news broadcast.

    Utilize your textbook and the internet for complete information on your topic.
         o Internet resources must be credited at the bottom of your script.
         o FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT, WIKIPEDIA DOES NOT COUNT AS A
            RESOURCE.

Anchor:            We have breaking news into CBS 8. The Soviet Union has
                   blockaded all of Berlin. Lets go to our man on the scene Ron
                   Burgandy. Ron what is happening in Berlin?

Ron Burgandy:      Things are not good here. The Soviet Union has blockaded
                   Berlin in the hopes to take control of the entire city. As you
                   know…..(provide background info).

**Ron Burgandy will interview citizen of Berlin about the conditions during the
blockade.

Anchor:            Thanks Ron for that great report. Let us now talk to our Cold
                   War expert about this situation. (Introduce Cold War expert)
