 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
10
11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF
12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF ATLAS
13 ROAD IN RICHLAND COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION
14 WITH BLUFF ROAD TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH
15 GARNERS FERRY ROAD “BISHOP A.C. JACKSON
16 MEMORIAL HIGHWAY” AND ERECT APPROPRIATE
17 MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS ROAD THAT CONTAIN
18 THE WORDS “BISHOP A.C. JACKSON MEMORIAL
19 HIGHWAY”.
20
21 Whereas, Bishop Andrew Charles Jackson, the son of Andrew and
22 Charlotte Green Jackson, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, in
23 his home town of Columbia; and
24
25 Whereas, his death came more than forty years after his founding
26 of Bible Way Church of Arthurtown, now Bible Way Church of
27 Atlas Road, and nine thousand members later; and
28
29 Whereas, the original “Little Red Church” with its thirteen adult
30 members symbolized the humble beginnings of this hugely vibrant
31 church and the self-taught man who envisioned its glorious place
32 in the spiritual lives of the people of Richland County; and
33
34 Whereas, that vision grew into a multifaceted ministry, reaching
35 out to and embracing young people, senior citizens, the poor, and
36 the needy; and
37
38 Whereas, although Bishop Jackson turned over the pulpit of Bible
39 Way Church of Atlas Road to his son, our friend, Senator Darrell
40 Jackson, a number of years prior to his death, following a stroke,
41 his booming voice has been ever present in the minds and hearts of
42 the congregation he taught and loved; and

     [4925] 1
 1
2 Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General
3 Assembly to recognize this great man of God by having a portion
4 of Atlas Road in Richland County named in his honor. Now,
 5 therefore,
 6
7 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
 8 concurring:
 9
10 That the members of the General Assembly request that the
11 Department of Transportation name the portion of Atlas Road in
12 Richland County from its intersection with Bluff Road to its
13 intersection with Garners Ferry Road “Bishop A.C. Jackson
14 Memorial Highway” and erect appropriate markers or signs along
15 this road that contain the words ‘Bishop A.C. Jackson Memorial
16 Highway”.
17
18 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
19 the Department of Transportation.
20 ----XX----
