          SOIL?

What are some characteristics a soil could
have to make a good habitat?

Write down your ideas, then turn to your
 neighbor and discuss your thoughts.

The soil environment: Organisms live in the microscale environments
within and between soil particles. Differences over short distances in pH,
moisture, pore size, and the types of food available create a broad range of
habitats.
           Species Diversity
            Richness vs. Evenness

Richness: The number of different species in
an area.

Evenness: The abundance of species in an
area in proportion to the total number of
individuals in a community.
Why is high species diversity in
 soil necessary or important?
What are some examples of …..
Microfauna:

Mesofauna:

Macrofauna:
How do you think the soils that we used for
    our Berlese funnel are different?
What abiotic factors might influence the
         biota found in the soil?

Prediction:
1) What types of organisms will we find in
   each type of soil?
2) Which soil do you predict will be higher
   in species richness?
