The vast majority, however, are people who have decided they want something different in their life other than just a 9-5 job. Are you one of them?
Would A Five Second Commute Interest You?
Many people start out part time from a home office. Small deals or multi-million dollar deals can be made from the comfort of their homes. These people enjoy what is often called the 5 second commute or the time it takes to get from their bedroom to their home office. It generally takes time to start, build and succeed in an import export business and that is where the 'extreme dreamers' referred to above make their first mistake. They want the 5 second commute without making any real commitment or within a specified timeframe (usually a couple of months or less). Their second mistake is thinking (or believing) they will succeed in their international trade business without a roadmap. And, the third mistake they often make is believing they can dive right into making their first export deal a multimillion dollar one in big volume or big ticket items like automobiles, diamonds, gold, urea or jets. They visit one (or more) of the many 'free' Internet sites where trade leads are posted. Many extreme dreamer "want to be" exporters think they have uncovered a gold mine when they discover these sites. I know, because that is when they call here.
I Don't Need A Roadmap Just Show Me The Secret Path To Making $300,000 In The Next 30 Days
These extreme dreamer "wannabe" exporters are often very sly. They feign interest in the start an import export toolkit to gain confidence and will try to keep the question and answers going until the true reason for their call is revealed. The truth finally comes out that they need help putting a deal together because they found several trade leads for 2000 metric tons of this or 500,000 barrels of that. They have that little calculator in their head calculating how RICH they will be by simply adding a small percentage mark up to each of those units! They listen "briefly" and often interrupt when the toolkit is mentioned. They
believe if they can keep pumping this guy on the other end of the line (me) for 30 minutes or an hour, they will learn all that they need to know to put this incredibly profitable deal together. They don't need a toolkit (roadmap) - they just want to be pointed down the yellow brick road to riches that will lead them to make $300,000 in the next 30 days. (Yes, I have had many conversations like this and yes, one did want to make $300K in 30 days). This is why it is often amusing (and - admittedly, quite irritating sometimes) when you see how many people think they can start an import or export business without devoting some time (and money) to learning how to do it properly. My fellow international business friends (hopefully you will allow me to call you a friend if you have stuck with us this far) the BIG deals are out there but there are many, many more profitable ones available from smaller products that are used every day. Things like food products, sporting goods, cardboard boxes, automotive products, health care products and many more. These are products that small and medium suppliers in the U.S. are manufacturing and selling domestically with no idea that people in other countries would love to buy their products. And, quite frankly, most of the BIG deals are locked up by the BIG companies and without learning the proper methods and processes of the business, you will never have a chance at one of these BIG deals. You want the TRUTH? You are getting the TRUTH, but can you handle it?

Granted, some people may feel more confident about themselves by having a certificate on the wall but, quite frankly, it isn't going to mean squat to a company owner or president when (and if) you bring it up to him or her in a conversation. An old saying goes something like "that piece of paper (your certificate) and a $1.37 will buy you a cup of coffee at the local mini-market" A little off track there, but this is a pet peeve - especially when several of the people who have spent thousands of dollars on one or more of these programs end up calling here and asking for help. You must possess a certain amount of sales ability to convince a manufacturer or importer why they should deal with you. You must be willing to work long hours, be constantly frustrated and realize this is not going to make you get rich quick. You must be willing to invest some of your profits back into your business.
