Methodology and Academic Development (MAD) Programme for PhD Students Department of Science and Technology Studies Approved by the Departmental Teaching Committee on 12 July 2006 POLICY All MPhil/PhD students not on CRS should complete activities worth 30 points per year (15 points for part-timers). The UCL requirement is 20 points per year, and requiring a higher number of point expresses the departmental commitment to students' academic development. The list of activities undertaken and points acquired should be logged electronically through the online skills register operated by the Graduate School. This will avoid duplication in record-keeping. MAD activities should be monitored as part of the regular departmental progress reviews. At each review meeting the student should submit to the panel a record of activities since the time of the previous review. It is the responsibility of the chair of the review panel to ensure that the monitoring takes place. It is a requirement for PhD transfer that the student has gained a sufficient number of MAD points, proportional to the length of enrolment. Any additions to the "Departmental" section of the following list of activities need to be approved by the Graduate Tutor, who should advise the Graduate School of new approved activities for inclusion in the central skills register.
