Course Selection Guide 4
ESPS COURSE SELECTION GUIDE 4 (2008–09)
Preliminary course choices for affiliate students
studying in ESPS 2008–09
INTRODUCTION: CHOOSING COURSES IN ESPS
The following pages provide details of courses that may be taken by affiliate students entering ESPS in the next
academic year. Students will be able to choose courses in ESPS as well as in a number of humanities and social
science departments, which contribute to the teaching of ESPS students.
Section A lists those courses offered by ESPS in the academic year 2008-09. Affiliate students entering ESPS in
autumn 2008 will be able to take these courses, subject to availability.
Please note that, where prerequisites ESPS/UCL courses are specified next to a particular ESPS option,
you must either take the prerequisite(s) while at UCL, or you must provide evidence that you have taken
a substantively equivalent course at your home university.
Section B lists those courses offered to affiliate students by departments contributing to ESPS. These
include:
o Anthropology, Economics, Geography, UCL History, SSEES (School of Slavonic and Eastern European
Studies) History, History of Art, Faculty of Laws, Philosophy, Bartlett School of Planning, Political Science,
Science and Technology Studies, Social Sciences, Statistical Sciences.
o The Language Centre for language courses.
Where prerequisites UCL courses are specified next to a particular course option, you must either take
the prerequisite(s) while at UCL, or you must provide evidence that you have taken a substantively
equivalent course at your home university.
Please note that affiliates wishing to study a course offered by a humanities or social science department should
also contact the relevant departmental coordinator (see contact details below) for more specific information on
individual course options, for example regarding academic prerequisites.
All affiliates should keep in mind that availability of courses for next year as listed in this guide cannot
yet be guaranteed, but the information presented here is as up to date as possible. You should consult
departmental webpages and the ESPS course pages over the summer for updated information on
availability and timetables.
For additional information, please see:

Course Selection Guide 4
What you must bear in mind when choosing your courses:
o Affiliate students are required to take courses to the value of 4.0 course units during their year in ESPS
(two semesters); students who spend only one semester in ESPS choose courses to the equivalent of 2.0
course units. Course values (in course units) are given in Sections A and B next to the individual courses.
o Note that UCL participates in the European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS) as the basic credit mechanism
for undergraduate study. The value of a full UCL course (1 course unit) is equivalent to 15 ECTS credits;
and the value of a half-unit (0.5 course unit) is equivalent to 7.5 ECTS credits. Your full year’s workload will
thus be 4.0 course units or 60 ECTS credits.
o The departments in which ESPS affiliate students may take courses are listed above (ESPS and contributing
departments, including the UCL Language Centre).
o Specific regulations set by your home university may govern your course choice at UCL; if so, it is your
responsibility to make sure that your course selection is approved by your home institution. It is therefore
useful to discuss your course choices with a tutor at your home university before coming to London.
o For details of course content, timetable and means of assessment, please consult departmental webpages,
or the ESPS webpage given on page 1. Website addresses are given under each section below.
o Where up-to-date information on next year’s teaching times is already available (in the case of ESPS
courses, for instance), you should check that your courses do not clash with one another.
Which courses do I take?
o Your choice of courses should be coherent and build on courses that you have already taken at your home
university.
o Affiliate students are required to take at least 1 units (15 ECTS) of foreign language-acquisition modules. It is
strongly advised that students take one or both of the modules in English language – LCEN6001 English
Language Skills for Academic Purposes (0.5 unit) and LCEN6801 Academic Writing in English for
Non-Native Speakers (0.5 unit) – as well as any additional foreign-language modules they desire to take.
However, students whose English is already at a sufficient level to cope with academic study in the English
language may take all their language modules in one (or two) other foreign languages.
o Please note that it is strongly advised that affiliate students take the core ESPS module ESPS 1001
Introduction to European History, Law, Politics and Philosophy (1 unit) to gain acquaintance with the range
of disciplines addressed by the ESPS degree.
o When selecting your optional modules, It is recommended that you consider taking several 1 unit modules
rather than taking only 0.5 unit modules. This will reduce your overall workload to manageable quantities of
classes, weekly reading, coursework and examinations over the course of the year. An additional practical
advantage of this is that the more 1 unit modules you take, the less likely you are to experience timetable
clashes. We suggest you select a maximum of four 0.5 unit modules.
Module requirements – a reminder:
o Affiliate students are required to take at least 1 unit (15 ECTS) of foreign-language acquisition modules. Of
these, one or both modules should be in English: LCEN6001 English Language Skills for Academic
Purposes (0.5 unit) and LCEN6801 Academic Writing in English for Non-Native Speakers (0.5 unit).
Students whose English is already at a sufficient level to cope with academic study in the English language
may take their language modules in one (or two) other foreign languages at the Language Centre. Current
courses include Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish.
o Affiliate students are also strongly advised to take the core ESPS module ESPS 1001 Introduction to
European History, Law, Politics and Philosophy (1 unit).

Course Selection Guide 4
How to apply and application deadlines:
1. Consult the course lists in sections A and B below. These are arranged by academic discipline. Select
courses to the value of 4.0 course units (including at least 1 unit in language-acquisition modules) or, where
applicable, 2.0 course units (see explanation above). Wherever the necessary information is already
available, you should check that your courses do not clash with one another.
NOTE: Your course choice application form must include the language course(s) you intend to take at
the UCL Language Centre (see page 20). You should indicate the course unit value (at least 1 unit)
you intend to take in the form of language classes, as well as the languages you will be studying.
Where students will study languages other than English, course levels and codes will be determined
at the beginning of term.
2. As first choices cannot be guaranteed, you should list 4.0 units of ‘first choices’ and at least 2.0 units of
‘reserve choices’. ESPS 1001 Introduction to European History, Law, Politics and Philosophy (1 unit),
LCEN6001 English Language Skills for Academic Purposes (0.5 unit) and LCEN6801 Academic Writing in
English for Non-Native Speakers (0.5 unit) have already been included in the Course Choice Application Form
for your convenience.
3. At the end of this document (section C), you will find a Course Choice Application Form. You should complete
and return the form to the ESPS Course Secretary (by post to: Nick Johnstone, European Social and Political
rd
Studies, 3 Floor, 33-35 Torrington Place, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom)
by Friday 8 August 2008 at the latest.
4. The ESPS office will then contact you in due course to let you know whether your course choices have been
accepted. You must therefore make sure to check your email regularly.
5. Please note that this is an application process only, and NOT the final registration for courses which
you will carry out at UCL. Availability can therefore NOT be guaranteed. As stated, we will keep you
informed regarding the progress of course selection.
If you have any questions, please email the ESPS Office at monika.steinel@ucl.ac.uk, or contact individual
course tutors.

and liberalization in post-war economies, and Europe's relationship with both East and West.
[Mark Hewitson, Term 2, Lecture Tues 12-1, Seminar Weds 10-11]
For first or second year ESPS students.
ESPS2102
The Politics of European Integration (0.5 unit)
This optional course aims to provide students with an understanding of the process of European integration, and its
current political implications for European nation-states. It discusses the origins and development of the EU,
different theoretical models of integration, policy aspects of the EU such as the European Social Policy and EMU,
the main EU institutions, the rise of a ‘EU political scene’, and finally looks at the question of enlargement of the EU.

Course Selection Guide 4
ESPS7205A
Special Topics in Political Philosophy A (0.5 unit)
FAMINE, WAR AND MARKETS: THEMES IN INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE
We live in a world of famine, wars, and natural disasters. What duties do we individually and collectively bear to
help those people in these unfortunate circumstances? Is there anything wrong with the enormous disparities
between the relatively affluent and the poorest parts of the world’s population? Do we have special duties
towards those who stand in particular relations to us? What is the relevance, if any, of national sovereignty for
questions of international justice? What bearing do toleration or gender concerns have on issues of international
justice?
This optional course is intended for students with a variety of specializations, but some background knowledge in
political philosophy. The course will be taught in seminar format, with one weekly two-hour meeting.
[Véronique Munoz-Dardé, Term 1, Seminar Mon 10-12]
For second or final year ESPS students.
ESPS7208
Art and Politics (0.5 unit)
This optional course comprises a critical examination of different attempts to grasp philosophically the political
significance of art and the aesthetic, with a concentration on classical German philosophy and the Frankfurt
School. It is designed for students pursuing a variety of disciplinary specialisations and no prior knowledge is
presupposed. The class meets weekly in lectures and discussion classes based on set readings.
[Sebastian Gardner, Term 2, Lecture Tues 3-4, Seminar Thurs 4-5]
For second or final year ESPS students.
ESPS7401
War and Peace (0.5 unit)
This optional course is designed for students who specialise in History, Philosophy or Politics. War and the
discourse about its legitimacy is one of the major features of human civilisation, or indeed the starkest sign of the
lack of civilisation. Students will engage in theories about war and peace from early modern to modern times. The
course will not only provide access to the main theories, but also look into current debates about the legitimacy of
war. Assessment is by one essay of the student’s own devising.
[Daniel Laqua, Term 1, Weds 11-1]
For second or final year ESPS students.
ESPS7402
Republicanism (0.5 unit)
This optional course is designed for students who specialise in History, Philosophy or Politics. The discourses about
political participation, the relation between the individual and the state and the legitimacy of state power are as old as
human forms of civilisation. The class will engage in the writings about republicanism, which will cover the
development of the main theories leading to the current debate about democracy in Europe and the issue of a
European consitution.
[Peter Schröder, Term 2, Seminar Thurs 1-3]
For second or final year ESPS students.
ESPS4201
Advanced Political Philosophy (0.5 unit)
This optional course is addressed to students who already have an understanding of historical and contemporary
debates in political philosophy. It aims to provide them with an opportunity for more advanced work in this area. The
course consists of lectures, discussion classes and a research seminar:
i) The lectures, taking place at Birkbeck College, are the intercollegiate lectures for second and third year single
honours philosophy students. They examine the major themes in the history of political thought and in contemporary
political philosophy.
ii) In the weekly discussion classes in Term 2, students raise questions about these issues and discuss connected
debates in political philosophy.
iii) The last 5 weeks of Term 2 will be devoted to a research seminar, convened by the course tutor. In it, advanced
postgraduates in philosophy will present papers on their research, in a form deliberately made accessible to ESPS
and philosophy undergraduates.
[Véronique Munoz-Dardé, Terms 1 & 2, Lecture Thurs 11-12 (Terms 1 & 2), Seminar Thurs 4-5 TBC (Term 2)
For final year ESPS students only.
