Dear :

I am writing to tell you about Afterschool for All, a national initiative designed by the Afterschool

Alliance to recognize organizations and leaders who support the goal of quality, affordable

afterschool programs for all children and youth. I would like to invite you to join this effort by

signing on at: http://www.afterschool2010.org/join.cfm. There is no requirement for inclusion as

an Afterschool for All partner, financial or otherwise; and it only takes a minute to sign on.

In America today, more than 14 million children are alone and unsupervised from 3 to 6:00

p.m.—peak hours when youth are most likely to be victims and perpetrators of juvenile crime

and when they are most vulnerable to substance abuse, teen pregnancy and other risky

behaviors. Afterschool programs help prevent youth violence, educate youth about the dangers

of drug and alcohol abuse, and provide a safe and supervised environment after school. Fight

Crime: Invest in Kids conducted a study that found that police chiefs, sheriffs and prosecutors

agree that rather than hiring more police officers or increasing punitive actions, investing in

afterschool programs would be more effective at reducing youth violence and crime.

Despite the clear need for more programs, many of those serving youth today must reduce their

services or close their doors. And each program that closes means more youth without a safe and

supervised place to go after school to learn, grow and be safe.

Fortunately, leaders around the country are coming together in support afterschool programs for

all youth who need them. More than 15,000 organizations and prominent individuals have

joined Afterschool for All including sixteen governors, 200 mayors, 120 police chiefs and 65

prosecutors. National organizations such as Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, the Police Executive

Research Forum, the National Center for Victims of Crime and the National Council on Crime

and Delinquency have signed on. Other partners include AARP; the Children’s Defense Fund;

IBM; the NAACP; the National Council of La Raza; the National PTA; the AFL-CIO; the NBA,

NFL, MLB and NHL; The US Conference of Mayors; YMCA of the USA; hundreds of regional,

state and city organizations; local afterschool providers; thousands of individual supporters and

approximately 50 colleges and universities.

Thank you in advance for registering your support for Afterschool for All. Your participation will

add weight to this important national effort.

Sincerely,
