P.A.L. PROGRAM (Police Activities League)
National PAL started back in the 1910s when Captain John Sweeney of the New York City Police
Department had the insight to offer inner-city youth some positive experiences, which involved law
enforcement. He began the Police Athletic League or PAL knowing that the program would influence the
youths significantly. Police involvement and supervision at places of play - ball fields, classrooms,
playgrounds, engaged the children and helped to position Police Officers as friends.
The Vancouver Police Activities League is carrying on this great tradition. They have been serving
Vancouver youth with both athletic and academic programs including boxing, an annual summer football
camp, basketball, a summer fishing derby and literacy just to name a few.
Image has been given an opportunity to work with the Vancouver Police Activities League (PAL). Officers
will visit students to discuss the importance of literacy, read to them, provide a take home book, and give
them a chance to tour a Vancouver Police car. Two of the Image fifth grade classes will participate on
November 30th at 9:30. First grade classes will participate on December 8 th and 10th at 9:30. We are very
excited!
