Have you ever seen a timber wolf? It looks like
a big dog. It is a sort of wild dog that lives in forests.
The timber wolf has thick gray fur. It has long,
strong legs. When it runs its big bushy tail goes flying
behind. When it listens, its ears stand up. Its long nose
sniffs for food. It watches with slanted green eyes.
A wolf hunts all day. He feeds the fuzzy
puppies. The wolf family lives in a den. If two wolf
mothers live close by, one may baby-sit all the puppies.
When puppies get bigger, the mother and father
take them hunting. A wolf family lives together in a
pack. The pack may hunt for moose or deer. A wolf
also eats rabbits and small animals.
The timber wolf gets its name from the place it
lives. Timber is a word for “big trees.” Therefore, the
wolf is called timber wolf because he lives by the big
                                      trees.
