Why Set Goals?
The Power of Goal
Setting
Can you name…
5 reasons that
people set goals?
How about these reasons?
To improve performance
To increase motivation
To gain satisfaction
To feel a sense of pride
To get the most out of life
To obtain something you really
desire
To plan a meaningful career
To keep you focused on what
you want!
Short-Term vs. Long-Term Goals
Sometimes people will set short-term
goals to help meet their long-term or
“bigger” goals.
Short-Term Goals
Can take anywhere from a week to
one or two years.
Long-Term Goals
Can take anywhere from 2 -5 years, or
even more to achieve!
Many short-term goals are often needed
to help reach long term goals.
Example of a Long-Term Goal
To Graduate from high school by 2015
with at least an 85% average
Example of a Long-Term Goal
To get my driver’s license
by the age of 18
Example of a Short-Term Goal
To achieve 90% on my Science Final
Example of a Short-Term Goal
To write and pass my learner’s driving
test on my birthday
What do you desire?
To make more friends?
To get in good physical shape?
To make a lot of money?
To have a career that you are passionate about?
Take 5 minutes to think about and
write down the following:
1 long-term goal that you desire to reach
1 short-term goal that will help you to reach
your long term goal
Sharing Goals
As the group shares
individual goals, do you notice any
common themes?
How are your goals unique?
How are they similar?
