What is a FTP site / FTP Server?

FTP sites are used for uploading and downloading files from different O.S clients
(Client O.S may be Microsoft family, Apple Macintosh, Novell Netware, UNIX / Linux
family O.Ss) over the LAN or Internet




Requirements for configuring FTP Server:

    A computer (SYS1) with Windows 2003 O.S.
    Computer (SYS1) with Static Public Address (If you want use from any where) or
     Static Private IP Address (If you want to use within Local LAN)

Steps for configuring FTP Server:

    Step1: Configure IP Address settings
    Step2 : Configure DNS Server for www.gayatricomputers.com= 192.168.1.1
     (Optional)
    Step3: Configure / create FTP site by using IIS Manager.

Step1: Configuring IP address settings on “SYS1” for FTP Server

From “SYS1” IIS server

      Login as “Administrator” on “SYS1”
      Right click on “My Network Places” – click on “Properties”
      Right click on “Local Area Connection” – click on “Properties”
      Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” - Click on “Properties”
      Type
                  IP address : 192.168.1.1
                  Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
                  Preferred DNS server : 192.168.1.1

Example: Create a folder with name “MYPROJECT” in “D” drive and copy some files

      Login as “Administrator” on “SYS1”
      Open “Computer” icon – Open “D” drive
      Create a folder with name “MYPROJECT”
      Copy some files in “D:\MYPROJECT”




Step4: Create “FTP site” by using “IIS Manager”

From “SYS1”

    Login as “Administrator”
    Start – Programs – Administrative Tools – Click on “Internet Information
     Services (IIS) Manager”
    Double click on “SYS1” - Double click on “FTP Sites”
    Right click on “FTP Sites” – Click on “New” – Click on “FTP Site”




    Click on “Next”
    Type Description as “MYPROJECT WORK” – Click on “Next”
    Enter the IP address to use for this FTP site : “192.168.1.1” - Click on “Next”

   Select the radio button “Do not isolate users” - Click on “Next”
   Type / Select Path as “D:\MYPROJECT” - Click on “Next”




   By default “Read” permissions (for Downloading)
   Select the check box “Write” (for Uploading) - Click on “Next”




   Click on “Finish”

  Uploading and Downloading files from Clients

  You can upload and download files from clients by using different ways

   1.Through Web Browser (Internet Explorer)
   2.Through Command Mode (From DOS prompt)
   3.Through Third Party Software (Ex: Smart FTP / Cute FTP client)


Uploading and Downloading files from FTP server through Web Browser:

From Server or Client Computer:

     Open “Internet Explorer”
     Type “FTP://192.168.1.1” in the address bar and click on “Go”
     Click on “Page”
     Click on “Open FTP site in Windows Explorer”

For Downloading from FTP Server:

    Right click any file / any folder from FTP server (sample.htm) – Click on “Copy”
    Click on “Computer”- Open Drive or Folder
    Right click on folder (Project) where you want to download - Click on “Paste”

For Uploading into FTP Server:

    Click on “Computer”- Open Drive or Folder
    Right click any file / any folder– Click on “Copy” (Which you want to upload)
    Right click on FTP server area – click on “Paste”

Uploading and Downloading files from FTP server through Command Mode:

Connecting to FTP server

    Click on “Start – Run – Type “CMD” – Click on “OK”




Downloading Files from FTP Server:

NOTE: “GET” is the command is used for downloading files




Uploading Files into FTP Server:

In “C:\PROJECT” folder “venkatgv.rtf” file, you want to upload

NOTE: “PUT” is the command for uploading files into FTP server.




Uploading and Downloading files from FTP server through smart FTP client:

    Most of Users use third party FTP software (Smart FTP, Cute FTP, GFTP ...Etc)
     for uploading and downloading files from GUI Mode in simple way.
    Download “Smart FTP Client software” and Install
    Connect to internet - Open Web Browser (Internet Explorer)
    Type “http://www.smartftp.com/download”in the address bar
    Click on “Download Smart FTP client” - After downloading ,Install Smart FTP
     client software

Using of Smart FTP Client Software for Uploading and Downloading:

      Double click on “Smart FTP client” icon on Desktop.
      Type “192.168.1.1” in Address bar (Which is FTP server IP address)
      Type Login as “Administrator” and Type Password as “abc_123”
      Click on “Go” - Select the files / folders from FTP server or Local Client
       Computer - Click on the Symbols for Uploading and Downloading

What is Virtual Directory in FTP and why do you require?

    Virtual Directory is used for accessing multiple folders by using one FTP site.
    When user want to access multiple folders from different locations(from
     different Servers / Folders ) by using one FTP server ,you have to create Virtual
     Directory - Virtual Directory is similar to Virtual Web Hosting




How to create Virtual Directory?

    Login as “Administrator” on “SYS1”
    Click on “Start – Programs – Administrative Tools – Click on “Internet
     Information Services(IIS)Manager
    Double click on “SYS1” - Double click on “FTP Sites”
    Right click on “MYPROJECT WORK” site – Click on “New” – Click on “Virtual
     Directory”




    Click on “Next” - Type Alias name as “SAP” (By using this name ,users can
     access “MYSAP PROJECT” folder ) - Click on “Next”

    Type / Select the Path as “D:\MY SAP PROJECT” folder (D:\MY SAP PROJECT =
     SAP Alias Name) - Click on “Next”




    By default “Read” is selected (Only for Downloading)
    Click on check box “Write” (If users want to upload files”)
    Click on “Next”




    Click on “Finish”

How to access Virtual Directory from Client computer?

    Open “Internet Explorer”
    Type “FTP://192.168.1.1/SAP” - in address bar – click on “GO”
