requirement, meet new friends and get to know old friends better, and learn new skills. For
adults who are unsure about their outdoor skills, this is an excellent opportunity to spend at
least one night and day in a residential camp environment.

Have a great week scouts and scouters!

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone is having a great Monday. A couple of things coming up in the coming
weeks for the Cheaha District. First if I could get all the dates for Pack’s Blue and Gold’s I
would appreciate it.

Also I would like to thank everyone who could make it, for making our district Banquet
such a good one, even though the weather did restrict for some people to be there. I have a
couple of things to get out to those who could not make it.

We are planning on having a rechartering party on Feb. 17th at Ashland First United
Methodist Church. So if you need any help with your recharter please come to this for
guidance.

The Spring Camporee is coming up and we are in the midst of planning it, so far what we’ve
come up with is that each troop will have an activity that they will host we will start to
figure this out as we get closer to the event. With the help of Tom Smith we have talked
with the people at Cheaha State park about holding our camporee in the improved camping
area near the lake, but there will be a cost with this. I would like to hold a camping
committee meeting about this mater and to go ahead and start planning for the camporee. So
if you Are interested in being involved in this process please reply to this email and you can
begin the process.

Our Pinewood Derby is being held at Sylacauga 1st Baptist Church. It will be held on Feb.
26th. Sign up and weigh in will start at 8:00 a.m. and will continue until 9:00 a.m.. Racing
will start at 9:30 a.m. We are using the council rules for this event so that it will be easier for
the winners to go on to the council Pinewood Derby without having to make any changes.

Also our March Round Table will be returning to Ashland because of many requests. So we
will meet in Ashland 1st United Methodist Church at 6:30 Thursday, March 3rd.

So we have a lot coming up, and if I have forgot anything please contact me and I will get
that information out also.

Good Monday morning!!! It was a great weekend. I do have one word for everyone
though. Owwwwwww!!!! I ran in my first half marathon yesterday and let me say that my
knee is paying the price for it today. However, it was a great experience that I really
enjoyed. I met my goal of finishing the 13.1 miles in under 2 hours so I am pleased. I

                                                                                  2/14/2011

would like to give a great congratulations to our own Daley Speer from Troop 29 who also
ran the half marathon yesterday as my running partner for about 11 miles. After that, I
couldn't keep up. He finished ahead of me and was barely sweating. I needed the
medic. :o) Great run, Daley. Thanks for keeping me going.

We have a lot of items on our plates for the next few months. First and foremost, please
make sure that you get your charters in. Please do not hesitate or delay on getting these in.
If you need my help on getting the paperwork completed, please call me. If you need youth
protection completed, please call me. If you have any questions, please call me. I am here
to help you get this done. Let's get them in.

We have the pinewood derby coming up on February 19th at the Quintard Mall. That is this
weekend. This pinewood derby will have five total categories; Tigers, Wolves, Bears,
Webelos, and Open Divisions. Trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be given away in each
category and then a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall will be given as well. You can only enter 1 car
in the rank divisions but multiple cars in the Open Division. Standard Pinewood Derby
Rules apply to all divisions including the open division. In the open division, anyone can
enter. It doesn't matter if you are 5 or 95, put a car in and compete to win. All entries are $5
per car. All participants will receive a 2011 Choccolocco District PW Derby patch. Ralph
Riddle said he's entering a car for anyone who wants to challenge him in the open division.
On a final note, I do need people to help with the check-in and operations of the
pinewood derby. I also need a Troop to volunteer for the flag ceremony.
Full uniform. Get with me ASAP on this if you are willing to volunteer. Service hours
will be awarded for all Boy Scouts that help. Check in begins at 9:00 a.m. Race begins at
10:00 a.m. The tournament will be double elimination. Lose twice and you are out. Let the
fun begin.

In March we have a Cub Down Under, Cub Adventure weekends planned at Camp
Sequoyah and Camp Comer. Camp Sequoyah will be March 11-13 and Camp Comer will
be March 18-20. The cost for this event is $58 per cub/partner or $80 for 2 cubs/partner.
Forms are available on-line at www.1bsa.org or you can e-mail me and I will send you one.
These events are a lot of fun for the Cubs so let's promote it and get them there.

On April 1-3, we have an Outdoor Leader Specific Class Scheduled at Camp Sequoyah that
is being hosted by Troop 4019. I encourage any leaders who have not had this class to sign
up for it ASAP. We have to have a minimum of 10 people to hold this class. If you have
any Webelos leaders that will be Boy Scout leaders next school year, then send them to the
class. This is a great class that I encourage everyone to have. Cost has not been determined
at this time but the date is firm. Put it on your calendar and e-mail me or Chris White at
chriswhite1231971@gmail.com your intent to go. Let's support this effort.

We also have a BALOO Class scheduled for May 14th. This will be held at the
Oxford United Methodist Church in Oxford, AL. If you would like to attend, please contact
me or Terry Wilson at cubscoutpack10@aol.com with your intent to go. I encourage all
leaders to attend this class, even those who may have had it in the past but might need a

refresher.

Day Camp is just around the corner. The dates for this week of fun is June 6-10. If you are
interested in helping with this event, please contact Terry Wilson at
cubscoutpack10@aol.com or Joey Hudgins at daddy2plus2@yahoo.com. They will be glad
to have your assistance. They will be having a meeting on February 24th for all those that
are interested in helping. This will be at the Oxford United Methodist Church on Snow
Street in Oxford. Call Terry or Joey for the time.

If you have not signed up for Summer Camp, please do so ASAP. Spots are filling up fast.
Make sure you take your kids to camp. Give them the full experience.

Choccolocco/Cheaha Fishing Rodeo-September 24th at Camp Sequoyah

I would like for everyone to make sure they get into their fall calendars Cub Scout Haunted
weekends. I mentioned at the last roundtable that I would like everyone to commit to
working at least one weekend at the Cub Scout Haunted. I am a very greedy DE and would
like for everyone to commit to all three weekends but I will take at least one. I would like
all of the Troops to sponsor and design a Fall Carnival type game that we can put on the
field in front of the Dining Hall to set up a fun atmosphere for all of the kids that come. Go
ahead and be thinking about this. I know that you will have fun as I do every year.

Guys, that about covers it. Please continue to strive towards excellence in everything that
we do. Serve the youth. That's what we are signed on to do. Thank you for all that you do.

We were also honored to award a National Heroism Award which is presented to a Scout
who has demonstrated heroism and skill in averting serious injury or saving or attempting to
save life at minimum risk to self.
The Heroism Award was presented to Jay Green, Boy Scout, Troop 810, Leesburg.
On June 16, 2010, Jay’s family went to swim at a pool owned by Kerry and Sheila
Akins. Jay’s little sister Hannah, 5 years old, needs to wear swim floats to aid her when
swimming. Before her mother could get Hannah’s floats on, Hannah ran to the diving board
and jumped in. Without any delay, Jay ran and jumped in and pulled her to the edge of the
pool, rescuing her.

and many other things that went on to pull this event together. Thank You, to LaVern

February 19th, we will have the Cultural Activities Day at Alabama A&M, at the Elmore

On Saturday, 29 January, at the Talakto District Annual Awards Banquet, Kameron
Purinton, a Webelo Scout with Cub Scout Pack 201 in Harvest, was presented the Heroism
Award, which was approved by the National Court of Honor. Tim Cooper, Council
Executive, presented the award to Kameron at the banquet, held at Holy Spirit Catholic
Church in Huntsville. Cameron’s parents can be seen beaming with pride at Kameron
being presented this award.

On Sunday, 6 February, during a monthly pack meeting, Pack 201 held its own ceremony
for Kameron, which was televised by Channels 31 and 54 out of Huntsville. Many of
Kameron’s relatives, including his grandparents, uncle and Godfather were able to be
present for this special occasion. Jim Charlton, Talakto District Commissioner, presided
over that ceremony.

Nearly a year ago the three Purinton boys and their mother were having a campfire in their
backyard. Their mother went back into the house to get some marshmallows. While she
was in the house, Kody, Kameron’s younger brother went to the shed, grabbed a can of
gasoline, came back and poured it on the fire. The fire erupted and caught Kody’s clothes
on fire. Kameron quickly grabbed the bucket of water they had ready next to the fire and
used it and his hands to extinguish the fire on Kody.

Three weeks earlier Kameron had been working on the WEBELOS Readyman activity
badge with his den leader Scott Gardiner. It focuses on being courageous, first aid skills,
and being strong, calm, clear and careful in an emergency. These ideas helped him be
prepared for what happened that evening. In addition, Kameron and Kip had learned in Cub
Scouts that whenever you have a fire, you must have water nearby to put out the fire. That
night they did what they were supposed to do and had a bucket of water handy.

Kody suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns and spent two months in the hospital. Doctors said
if Kameron had not acted as quickly as he did, things could have been much worse.

Kameron was nominated for the National Medal of Heroism by Pack 201’s leadership. The
BSA national court of honor reviewed the nomination and also agreed that Kameron is a
hero.

This is but one example of how Scouting teaches our youth to “Be Prepared” for whatever
life might throw at them. Congratulations to Kameron for being prepared and preventing his
brother from more serious injuries.

                                                                                   2/14/2011

On Saturday, 29 January, at the Talakto District Annual Awards Banquet, five volunteer
Scouters were recognized for their outstanding support to the Talakto District and received
the District Award of Merit for 2010. These outstanding Scouters include Jim Colson, Greg
Hagelberg, Art Hargrove, Joe Pohuski, and Jani Thomas. Almost 170 volunteers and scouts
attended the banquet, held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Huntsville. Congratulations to
these Scouters and thank you so much for all you do to help make Talakto District the
outstanding district it is, but more importantly, what an outstanding program we provide for

Several of you have expressed concerns with the Family FOS Presentation. The script that is
used for 2011 incorporates an understanding of the current state of our economy. We do
have great news to report on the presentations. As of today, each of the units that have
received the presentation has had an increased number of families to support the cause. We
understand that times are tough, but please allow your parents to give at the level that is
comfortable for them.

Take a moment to contact Jon Ryan at (205) 467- 9170 or email him at

Excellence Awards Forms for each scouting program. This award replaces the Centennial
Quality Unit Award and will be based on your 2010 successes instead of assigning goals and
listing verbal commitments at the end of the year. Should each unit accomplish the
“Bronze” level, we would have really good units. Should each unit accomplish the “Silver”
level, we would see a great turn around in the overall quality of our programs. Should each
unit accomplish the “Gold” level, we would have done above and beyond the requirements
to make our units the best possible. Each accomplishment and level is designed to make our
programs better, provide consistency across the board, and to make scouting available in
each community for every youth. One key component to this award is that we must have
each accomplishment documented and in the computer system.

If you are interested in receiving District specific information, as a unit leader, please email
bwilson@1bsa.org under the Subject: Sign me up.

                                 Saturday, February 26, 2011
Vulcan District Cub Scouts and Scouters (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos, and Akelas) are
invited to race for the Vulcan District Championships.
                            When: Saturday, February 26, 2011
Weigh-in and Registration begins at 10 a.m. and will continue until the race
begins. Racing begins at noon, starting with Akela and Modified and finishing
with the Webelos. Note: you can enter your car and leave to go to other
activities, or your car can be entered by someone else.

Where: New Location !!! St Mark’s United Methodist Church, 2901 Columbiana Road
in Vestavia Hills, just up the hill from the intersection of I-65 and Montgomery
Highway. The Pinewood Derby will be in the gym.

Who: There will be categories for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos and Akela. Akela
division includes leaders, parents and siblings (cubs can not enter an ‘extra’ car
in this category). There will also be a single Modified wheel division.

Awards: Trophies for winners in each category.
                              Fee: Registration $5.00 per car.

This year we will run age group or rank categories with unmodified wheels. We will
have one combined cub modified wheel category. While Cubs may enter both modified
andunmodified categories, separate cars must be built for each. A cub can enter no more than
one car in each category (age group and Cub modified division). There will be a single
Akela category for unmodified wheels only. Akela cars with modified wheels can run
exhibition only (they will not be eligible for Akela trophies). Akela is defined as leaders,
parents and siblings. Scouts can not enter the Akela division.

Technical rules for the cars are the same as for the Council Pinewood Derby. These rules are
on the council website. Final decisions on the eligibility of a car are the responsibility of the
                                        race director.
