Ageism in business survey - key findings
To find out how people at work feel about age, we asked a cross section of managers for their views and got some surprising results.
Positive messages about older workers are getting through – but so are People don’t want to work forever
negative messages about younger people Only 20% of managers would work until they were 70 – and then only on a part-time basis
64% of respondents felt older workers brought experience and loyalty to a job, they
also felt older workers were more reliable (67%) and more conscientious (64%) than People’s aspirations about retirement change as they get older
younger workers. The average age 26-30 year olds want to retire is 51, the average age of the 51-55
age group is 60.

Line managers support age legislation – but want more information
68% of survey respondents thought age laws were necessary and two thirds wanted
more information on the Government’s plans.
Age discrimination laws won’t change recruitment practice
78% of managers didn’t think the introduction of age discrimination legislation would
change recruitment practice in their organisation.
It is much harder for older men to find a job than older women
72% of survey respondents felt men over 50 were at a disadvantage compared to
51% who felt older women were disadvantaged.
People should be allowed to work as long as they wish regardless of age
The majority of managers (69%) don’t think people should be forced to retire

RETIREMENT AGE – IN AN IDEAL WORLD HOW TO OBTAIN A COPY OF THE REPORT
Nearly a third (32%) of managers would prefer to retire from full-time work at You are able to download a copy of The Guide to Age Diversity from
55 years of age. Another quarter (26%) said they would ideally work until 60 www.kellyservices.co.uk or email communications@kellyservices.co.uk for
years; only 6% wanted to work full-time until 70 years of age. 15% would a hard copy. The report combines full details of the Ageism in Business survey
happily retire at 50 if they could. with everything you need to know on how to beat age discrimination at work
and what you should be doing now to prepare for the new legislation.
On the whole, the managers asked would consider part-time working for
longer than full-time working. 27% of managers would like to retire from part-
time work at 65 years and 20% would work part-time until 70 years of age.
The younger respondents had unrealistic expectations of when they will be
able to retire. They hoped to retire in their early 50’s, while the older
respondents thought retirement would be possible in their early 60’s.
As the ‘pensions crisis’ becomes a reality, these dreams of earlier retirement
may well be crushed.
IN CONCLUSION
This survey gives just a flavour of how managers feel about age in the
work place. The results reinforce the challenge we all face in tackling ageist
stereotyping, affecting both younger and older workers. The findings also
demonstrate just how difficult it is going to be to make age discrimination
laws really work for everyone - and that means employers and employees
alike. With an ageing population and the increasing competition for skills,
it is important to remember it’s all about ability and not age.
