DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
During the month of February, over 280 metro Atlanta McDonald's restaurants will honor the contributions of Selena
Sloan Butler, who organized the first National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers (NCCPT) and co-founded
the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, which is now the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Butler
also organized the Georgia Colored Congress of Parents and Teachers (GCCPT) in 1919 and Georgia's first African
American PTA in 1911 at Young Street Elementary School in Atlanta. Her commitment to strengthening the
relationship between parents and teachers to provide the best education possible for all youth, more than eighty
years ago is remarkably noteworthy. In honor of her contributions, McDonald's is offering a FREE coupon to all PTA
members to try their new McDonald's Fruit and Maple Oatmeal. Go to the following link
http://www.247econnect.com/listings.cfm?srchby=co&companyid=450&sst=GA to get your complimentary
McDonald's new Fruit and Maple Oatmeal coupon. Be sure to select a location from the drop-down box -- only
certain McDonald's restaurants are participating in this promotion. If you are not already a member of Community
Alliance Partners (CAP), provider for Georgia PTA perks, you will need to set up an on-line account. Just follow the
prompts to create a new account.

Random Acts of Kindness Day is Thursday, February 17. Perform a few random acts of kindness. Almost any kind
deed will do. This is a favorite day of many people and groups. People like the idea of showing a little kindness to
others. It’s a fun and good thing to do. And, they like being on the receiving end of this day as well. It makes both the
giver and the receiver feel good. Please note: Random Acts of Kindness is contagious!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH CLUB
Many thanks to everyone who donated jeans as Pope delivered 202 pairs of jeans to our local Town Center
Aéropostale store to be donated to homeless shelters. In response, Aéropostale has provided coupons for 25%
off a total store purchase, so if you donated jeans, please pick up a coupon on the bookshelf at PPO. Thank you!

The boxed Valentine’s card drive for our sister school, Powers Ferry Elementary, was an overwhelming success.
This was primarily due to the fantastic efforts of the Future Educators of America Club and NHS who collectively
donated nearly 300 boxes of cards! In addition, the Octagon and Interact Clubs, as well as Hightower Trail Middle
School and all our Pope families donated an additional 348 boxes of cards. Thanks to the generosity of everyone,
we have an inventory for next year.

Girl Scout Troop 2446 appreciates all the gently worn shoes donated for the Nashville-based charity,
Soles4Souls. Since 2005, almost 13 million shoes have been distributed to over 125 countries with a new pair of
shoes being distributed every 7 seconds. Changing the world, one pair at a time ®

GIRLS TENNIS
Friday's sunny afternoon match against Blessed Trinity turned into a bone-chilling nail-biter as it came down to
our #3 singles player who won a tight second-set tie-breaker after being down a set. The third set tie-break could
have gone either way, but we ended up losing the match 3-2. We came back later that night to redeem ourselves
with a 4-1 wallop over South Forsyth. And then ended the tournament on Saturday with a 5-0 sweep over
Etowah. The Pope Lady Hounds won the Consolation Round of the T3 tourney this past weekend

The afternoon started with blue skies and warm sun in our 4-1 WIN over Roswell High School on Tuesday,
February 15. All three of our singles matches finished up promptly in straight sets with great play as both doubles
matches pulled themselves out of tight spots for well-fought wins! One Doubles came back from a 1-4 deficit in
the first set to win in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 while the Two Doubles kept their heads in the game after losing a first
set tie-break for a come-back win in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. Way to go Lady Hounds!

SOCCER
In the year's regular season opening game, the Lady Greyhounds Varsity Girls team defeated Lassiter, with a score
of 3 - 2. Ryann Davie scored two goals, with an assist by Jessie Sexton. The other goal was scored by Jessie
Sexton, off a corner kick by Kelly Reilly. The Varsity Boys soccer team lost by a score of 4 -1 against Lassiter, with
the goal scored by David Levinson off a penalty kick. The next Varsity soccer games are on Tuesday, February 22
at home against Kell - Girls play at 5:00pm, Boys at 7:00pm.
MARATHON LACROSSE ACTION SCHEDULED FOR 5TH ANNUAL AJO4LAX FEST
If you love lacrosse, you’ll want to mark down Saturday, March 19 on your calendar. Go ahead and block out the
entire day. That’s when Pope High School Stadium and its brand new turf field will host ten top-rated GHSA
lacrosse teams including the 2 defending champions playing each other in the fifth annual AJO4LAX Fest.

The AJO4LAX Fest honors the memory of Andrew J. Oswald, a Pope High School lacrosse standout who died in July
2005 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Oswald wore jersey #4 playing attack for the
Greyhounds from 2002-2004 and lacrosse was his passion.

Gates open at 9:00am. By sundown, five GHSA sanctioned high school lacrosse games will be played back-to-back
on the same new turf field: Pace Academy vs. Wheeler HS @ 10:00am, followed by The Lovett School vs. Lambert
HS @ noon, followed by Northview HS vs. Lassiter HS @ 2:00pm, followed by Milton HS vs. The Westminster
School @ 4:00pm, and concluding with Walton HS vs. Pope HS @ 6:00pm.

Tickets will be sold at the door: $7 for adults and $3 for children, under the age of 12. The same ticket is good for
admission to all five games. Proceeds from the tournament will fund college scholarships, grants to youth and high
school lacrosse programs, as well as a partnership with Safe America in support of teen safe driving initiatives.

“We are pleased that the AJO4LAX Fest has become Georgia’s premier invitational event for high school teams
during the regular lacrosse season. Through our success, we hope to have an even greater impact on teen safe
driving in the future.” said Bruce Oswald, Andrew’s father and President of the Andrew J. Oswald Memorial Fund,
Ltd.

For additional AJO-4-LAX Fest sponsorship information, to make a tax-deductible donation, request a scholarship
application, or for advanced ticket sales contact Bruce or Kathleen Oswald, 2702 Long Lake Terrace, Roswell, GA
