Job Title:                          Study Director – Product Chemistry

Department:                         Ecotoxicology

Location:                           Shawbury

Reports to:                         General Manager

Responsible for:                    1 technical staff

    Job Purpose/Objective(s)


         Undertake investigations into the physical and chemical properties of materials.
         Balance multiple phases of multiple studies simultaneously.
         Interpret results from supporting departments (e.g., analytical chemistry) and relevant
          regulatory requirements.
         Ensure laboratory communication and coordination of testing requirements.
         Undertake verbal and written communication with Study Sponsors.
         Supervisory responsibility for technical staff.
         Responsible for acting as Study Director/Principle Investigator for GLP studies when
          directed by Test Site management.

Key Result Areas

1.     Perform and understand all physical and chemical related tasks associated with the
       performance of the studies.
2.     Review, understand and interpret study protocols and agency guidelines.
3.     Effective and efficient Project Management of all studies.
4.     Undertakes appropriate training and development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.     Coordinate scheduling of studies and sample analyses.
2.     Confirm calculations for dosing solutions.
3.     Coordinate supporting events required by study protocol.
4.     Culture test species.
5.     Maintain cleanliness of the labs, storage and culture areas.
6.     Execute regular maintenance / calibration of equipment.
7.     Perform hands-on execution of biological events required to execute study protocols
       effectively.
8.     Review data records, perform and interpret statistical analyses of data and participate
       in performing technical review of study reports.
9.     Performs essential training of technical staff.
10.    Inter-relate results from supporting departments, i.e. Analytical Chemistry.
11.    Provide routine summaries, study schedules and results to clients.
12.    Supervisory responsibility for technical staff.
13.    Assist with organisation, direction and training of technician/s.
14.    Understand, follow and promote Good Laboratory Practice standards.

Health & Safety
15.    Maintain appropriate and effective health and safety arrangements for the Laboratory
       in conjunction with the Health and Safety Officer.
16.    Maintain highest standards of housekeeping particularly with respect to storage of
       materials, chemicals, solvents and customer samples.
17.    Must be able to comprehend the potential hazards of working with chemicals.
18.    Take all reasonable steps to ensure own safety and that of others.
19.    Comply with all health and safety information, instruction and training as it relates to
       the individual, role and organisation.
20.    Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): gloves, lab
       coat, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suit, plastic booties, dust
       masks, and a respirator, as needed.

Quality
21.     Assist with ensuring that the relevant quality accreditation is maintained through full
        procedural compliance.
22.     Liaise with the Quality Unit, as appropriate, to ensure efficient implementation of
        internal and external audits.
23.     When acting as Study Director/Principle Investigator, responsible for ensuring that
        GLP studies are compliant to the UK Good Laboratory Practice Regulations 1999.

24.   Undertake such other reasonable duties and responsibilities appropriate to the
      position as may be allocated by management from time to time.
