Coalition for Eco-Recreation Minutes of the March 11, 2006 Meeting Called to order; 11:00 a.m. 380 Riverview Drive, La Belle. (Margaret England’s home) The following participated in the meeting Margaret England, Chair Phillip Keys Terri Lazar John Capece Marta S. Daltry Louis James Peter Newman Mel Karau Reviewed minutes of previous meeting; Terri made the motion to accept the minutes. Mel seconded the motion. Motion passed. La Belle Nature Park (http://labellenaturepark.net/) Security; The sign specifying opening at ‘sunup’ and closing at ‘sundown’ is in the process of being printed by Lyons Printing. Mel will have Phil Pellitier check the sign to see that it will comply with Parks and Recreation. John voiced ideas of an electronic security system. Sheriff Ronnie Lee needs to have a neighborhood watch meeting in order to formally start a neighborhood watch. Improvements; Mary Ruth Prouty (health department) has $7,500 that could provide a Kiosk showing the trails with distances between landmarks. John will check into costs. The money from Ruth is a health grant that must be spent by June. Publicity; Park brochures placed at the Chamber of Commerce and City Hall have been depleted. A new supply is needed. John will be providing a brochure with plant identification photos. The DVD of the oxbow restoration project is out and being viewed by groups. The Park now has Geo-Trekker status. Margaret found a Geo-Cache in the Park (http://www.geocaching.com/). Hendry County Economic Development Council (http://www.hendrycountyedc.com/) Focus Meetings; Another round of meetings took place to address a wide variety of issues facing Hendry and Glades Counties. Water quality and the environment still remain important subjects. These meeting are met to build a consensus among residence in order to form sensible growth planning. Recent events in the area have highlighted bird watching or ‘Birding’ as an important tourist attraction. The Coalition encourages motels, shops, and restaurants to accommodate the bird watcher or ‘Birder’ so that repeat visits will be likely. The next La Belle meeting is April 13 at 6 p.m. in the La Belle Civic Center. Bob Mason Park (Labelle Lion's Club Park, SR 78 & SR 29, Caloosahatchee River, La Belle) Maintenance; The woodchips or mulch for the bromeliad plantings will be spread Sunday March 12 by a volunteer bucket brigade. New Business La Belle Nature Park (http://labellenaturepark.net/) Security; The homeless resident situation in the Park needs to be addressed by the Sheriff. Bicycle Paths Improvements; CHIP or Citizens Highway Initiative Program is coming back. Larry Hall, P. O. Box 757, La Belle, FL 33935 (ph. 863-675-1313) is the president of this program. The next CHIP meeting is April 1st. Bicycle paths need to be put on the program agenda. Adjourned; At 12:30 p.m. Mel made the motion to adjourn. Peter seconded the motion. Motion passed.
