                              Merit Badge College
                                    Saturday January 16, 2010

                    Prerequisites for each Merit Badge are as follows:

For ALL: Read the Merit Badge pamphlet and complete to the best of your ability the worksheet
from meritbadge.com for the class you are taking. Scouts are responsible for reviewing, verifying
and completing all pre-requisite requirements. You must have a written letter from your
scoutmaster verifying completion or the actual work.

All Scouts Must Bring: 1) Merit Badge Book 2) Merit Badge Worksheet
3) Notepaper with pen or pencil 3) LUNCH 4) Wear Class A Uniform

Architecture (1/2 day –pm) – No advance requirements

Animal Science
       1. Provide proof, a letter signed by your parents, scoutmaster or owner that you have visited a
          farm that specializes in raising beef cattle, dairy cows (milk production), horses, sheep, hogs
          or avian. (Requirement No.6)

Auto Mechanics – No advance requirements

           Note: Do to facility constraints the size of the class is limited to 7

Basketry – No advance requirements.

      1. NOTE: Due to the facility constraints the size of the class is limited to 20. There is an
         additional cost of $15.00 to cover materials.

Citizenship in the Nation

      1.   A tour of the United States Coast Guard Academy is included as part of this class.

      2. Watch the national evening news five days in a row OR read the front
         page of a major daily newspaper five days in arrow. Discuss the national
         issues you learned about with your counselor. Choose one of the issues and
         explain how it affects you and your family. (Requirement No.3)

      3. With your counselor’s approval, choose a speech of national historical importance.
         Find out about the author, and tell your counselor about the person who gave the speech.
         Explain the importance of the speech at the time it was given, and
         tell how it applies to American citizens today. Choose a sentence or two from the speech
         that has significant meaning to you, and tell your counselor why. (Requirement No.6)
      4. Name your two senators and the member of Congress from your congressional district.
         Write a letter about a national issue and send it to one of these elected officials, sharing your
         view with him or her. Show your letter and any response you receive to your counselor.
         (Requirement No. 8)

Emergency Preparedness

       1. Bring a personal emergency pack
       2. Bring your family emergency pack kit.
       3. Proof of having earned the First Aid Merit Badge.

Electricity

       1. Complete and electrical home safety inspection of your home using the checklist found in the
          Electricity Merit Badge pamphlet. (Requirement No.2)

Engineering – No advance requirements

Fire Safety -

       1.     This class will be held at a local firehouse.

       2.     Draw a home fire-escape plan, create a home fire-drill schedule, and conduct a home fire
              drill. (Requirement No.6a)

First Aid – No Advanced Requirements

Geology – No Advanced Requirements

Journalism - (1/2 day event – am)

       1.     A visit to a local newspaper is included as part of this class.

       2. Attend a public event (could be a scouting event). Take notes, gather
          information and bring it with you to the class. Photographs of the event may be
          included with your writing and/or presentation. (Requirement No.4)

Medicine -

       1. Visit a physicians office, preferably one who delivers “primary care.” Discuss the
          components of a medical history and physical examination, and become familiar with the
          instruments used. (Requirement No. 7)

Photography

       1.     The counselor for this class is a professional photographer for National Geographic.

       2. Complete either a or b for No.4. Your purpose is to photograph a topic of interest to you,
          develop the pictures and mount them on a picture board, in sequence, so they tell a story.
          You may create a slide show on your computer.

       3. Bring a camera with you, preferably digital.

Plant Science - No advance requirements

Public Health – No Advanced Requirements
Reptiles and Amphibians – No advance requirements.

Theater –
      1. See or read three full-length plays or scripts. These can be from the stage, movies,
          television, or video. Write a review about each. Comment on the story, acting, and
          staging. Bring the reviews with you for discussion with your counselor.

Traffic Safety – No Advanced Requirements

       1.   Will be taught off-site at one of the local firehouses.

Veterinary Medicine -

Woodwork:

       NOTE: Due to the facility constraints the size of the class is limited to 15. There is an additional
       cost of $15.00 to cover materials.

       1.   Show evidence that you have earned the Totin’ Chip for requirement 1.




NOTE: It is suggested/recommended that fire safety and traffic safety be taken together.
They are both being taught at the same facility.
