About This Dataset
Introduction:
This dataset contains tourism information collected from the arctic regions of The United States, Canada, Sweden, Norway,
Iceland, and Greenland. The initial intention of this investigation was to collect data related to tourism visitation,
employment, and expenditures within each region. However, as tourism does not represent an explicit industrial classification
in all regions, data collection resulted in a more heterogeneous dataset than originally expected.
Alaska, Canada, and Norway have data available for both employment and visitation related to tourism. Conversely,
Lapland, Iceland, and Greenland are limited to tourism related visitation. For a visual description of which data is available,
an additional worksheet (labeled "Tourism Indicators") in the Variable List workbook provides a list of indicators created by
AON as an attempt to illustrate the effect that tourism has on a particular region.

In this Workbook:
Variable List
The "Variable List" worksheetsheet provides a complete list of all variables presented in the dataset. Each variable is
accompanied by the variable label, the region represented, and the year covered in that data point. Additional worksheets are
provided for each country which list the methodology and technical definitions used in that region.
Primary Data Sources
Listed in the "Primary Data Sources" worksheet links to primary data sources have been provided for each country. This
information can be used to better understand the origins and methodology behind the data creation, as well as locate
additional data as it becomes available. When available, contact information of the agency has also been provided so
researchers may inquire about additional information.
Tourism Indicators
The worksheet listed as "Tourism Indicators" provides a list of indicators created by AON as an attempt to illustrate the
effect that tourism has on a particular region. Check marks are placed next to each indicator when the information located
satisfied that indicator; a blank space indicates insufficient data were available. A word of caution: although the data satisfies
the generic indicator, reporting varies greatly across regions.
Country Specific Worksheets
Each country has an individual worksheet that defines concepts and definitions used in this dataset. Links are provided to
primary data sources for further inquiry.

Business travel travellers going abroad on behalf of non-resident enterprises, government employees on official visits and
non-resident workers. Personal travel covers travellers going abroad for purposes other than business, such as holidays,
visiting friends and relatives, studies or health-related purposes.
Passenger fares
In the BoPM, passenger fares are included in the transportation item of the balance of payment statistics. The transportation
item is subdivided by type of transportation equipment and into freight, passengers and other. Passenger fares include fares
of non-resident travellers with Icelandic transportation companies and rental (charters) of carriers with crew for limited
periods.
Travel expenditure abroad
Expenditures of Icelandic residents travelling abroad, e.g. on accommodation and fares with foreign transportation
companies. Also included are rental (charters) of carriers with crew for limited periods.
Exchange rate of the USD

Classification system
Balance of Payments Manual, 5th ed., published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1993.

3. Data processing
Data are processed quarterly by the Statistics & IT of the Central Bank of Iceland. Rules on the obligation to provide
information on foreign exchange and capital movements stipulate that all parties authorised to act as intermediaries in foreign
exchange transactions shall classify all transactions by their nature according to the Central Bank of Iceland’s manual on
foreign exchange transactions and send data on them to the Central Bank. In processing data on foreign travel receipts and
expenditures the following data are used: purchase and sale of foreign notes up to 700 thousand kr., other foreign currency
transfers where the transaction is classified as currency for travelling, travel services, education and health services. All
figures are stated at the buying rate.
4. Integrity
The BoP Manual recommends compiling the balance of payments on an accrual basis i.e. transactions are to be recorded
when agreed upon rather than when settled if the settlement is not simultaneous. Because of difficulties in obtaining accrual
data many countries, including Iceland, have used settlement data as a proxy for the transactions. In many cases the
settlement is simultaneous with the making of the transaction but some timing difference between receipts and expenditures
can occur when trade credits are applied.
5. Revision of data
As a general rule, the quarterly data for the current and last couple of years are preliminary. Figures are
revised at each compilation if needed.
6. Time series and data frequency
Data are available at a quarterly frequency from 1990.
7. Publication
Data are published quarterly on the Statistics page of the Central Bank of Iceland website. A release calendar is posted on
