                                    1998 QWA Annual Awards
                                                  By Ian Moir

In the month of December many organisations hold functions to celebrate their achievements during the year
and herald the coming festive season. The QWA is no exception. Although attendance was down a little on last
year, the 1998 annual awards dinner, held at the Wynnum Manly Sports Club on December 5th, was an
enjoyable evening and fitting wrap up of the year that was.

In his opening address QWA President, Dr Laurence Chalip, gave a brief overview of what has been one of the
QWA’s best years. In 1998 our state teams either maintained their positions or improved on last year’s
performances at national championships, more of our athletes and coaches gained selection in national teams,
our family of weightlifting clubs grew and the QWA once again received considerable financial support from the
Queensland Government.

After dinner I had the pleasure of announcing the long list of achievements of the athletes nominated for the
various “Best Lifter” awards. This year the athletes categories included two new awards, the Best Under 14
Female, which was won by Christy Timms of the Cougars club, and the Best Under 14 Male which went to
another Cougars lifter, Maurice Kanara. Amanda Phillips from Cougars received the Best Under 17 Female
trophy for her solid performances at state, national and international events throughout the year. Amanda is
the current Australian under 18, under 20 and open champion and holds national under 18 and under 20
records. The Best Under 17 Male award went to Maryborough’s Dion Wood. Dion won silver at the national
under 16 championships this year and set national under 16 records.

Toowoomba’s Melissa Bethune was awarded the Best Junior Female trophy. Following Melissa’s 8th placing at
this year’s World Junior championships, she won the Australian Junior championship, set national junior records
and became the first female Queensland weightlifter to clean & jerk 105kg. Anthony Martin also set a new
mark this year as the first Queenslander to clean & jerk 200kg. Anthony, from the Cougars, won the Best Junior
Male trophy. Although not present to accept this award in person, Anthony had a pretty good excuse for his
absence. He was in Melbourne competing in the Telstra Grand Prix event with, among others, the World
Champion Andrej Chemerkin of Russia.

All three of the finalists for Rookie of the Year represented Queensland in 1997. Justine Horseman of the
Sunshine Coast took the prize for her outstanding performances after making the switch from powerlifting to
weightlifting early in 1998. In her first national weightlifting championship Justine won the bronze medal in the
53kg category.

Toowoomba’s Greg Hobl was awarded the Maurie Carmichael shield for Best Masters Lifter. One of
Queensland’s many Masters lifters, Greg is the current Australian 77kg champion in the 35-39 years age group
and state and national Masters record holder.

The final two awards for athletes were those for the Senior lifters. Angela Bentley, took out the QWA’s Best
Senior Female category. A member of the national Olympic Athlete Program squad, Angela represented
Australia at the Commonwealth and Oceania championships, winning silver and bronze medals. She also
successfully defended her national championship title in August. Alex Goodyear won the title of Best Senior
Male. Alex achieved a silver medal at this year’s nationals and holds state records in both the 77kg and 85kg
categories.

This year’s Best Club Coach award went to Greg Hobl who continues to deliver the sport of weightlifting to the
good people of Toowoomba. Throughout the year Greg conducted regular lunch-time training sessions for
students at Toowoomba State High School as well as the evening training of the Toowoomba Weightlifting
Association. Greg’s success as a coach is born out by the results of his athletes who achieved state, national and
international recognition in 1998.

The Best Novice Coach award was won by Michael Power. A former “school boy” lifter himself, Michael has
established weightlifting at St Laurence’s College in South Brisbane. With Michael’s guidance the St Laurence’s

lifters made a big splash on the Queensland weightlifting scene this year with members of the squad
representing Queensland and setting state and national under 16 records.

From its base high on the hill at Mt Lofty, the Toowoomba Weightlifting Association continues to grab the
attention of the Darling Downs region and focus it on the success of the club’s activities. The TWA hosted
numerous state weightlifting events in 1998 and provided lifters and coaches to Queensland teams at all
national championships. In 1998, the TWA was awarded the Bob Henderson shield for Best Club.

The QWA magazine, Weightlifting Queensland, is enjoyed by members throughout the state and also by many
of our interstate compatriots. The publication of Weightlifting Queensland, with it’s mix of information,
competition results, news and views is made possible by the outstanding work of our magazine’s editor Angela
Bentley. Somehow, in between working, training and adopting stray cats, Angela manages to find the time to
collect contributions for each quarterly edition and fashion them into the fine publication that we all look
forward to reading every few months. Angela was the 1998 Volunteer of the Year.

Barry Harden once again won the award for Contribution to Special Groups making it three years in a row.
After gaining his qualifications as an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting referee, Barry has
really thrown himself into that parallel (that’s what the “Para” in Paralympic means) weightlifting sport. Barry
took steps to further his involvement in this area by undertaking a course in coaching athletes with disabilities
and volunteering his time at the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Sport Association’s gym in Brisbane.

Nobody contributes to the QWA as much and in as many different ways as Mike Keelan does. As a member of
the QWA Management Committee, Mike continues to work tirelessly to advance our sport in Queensland.
Heading up the portfolio of Coach and Athlete Development in 1998, he coordinated and conducted the squad
training program and helped 5 QWA clubs access state government funding which provided 10 coaches with the
opportunity to attend the National Coaching Conference in Melbourne. Mike was also head coach of the
Queensland teams at national championships again this year and he designed and wrote the national officiating
program for weightlifting. These are just some of the many things Mike achieved for Queensland weightlifting
that made him QWA Official/Office Bearer of the Year.

This year, as last year, the Awards Committee felt compelled to recognise the outstanding service given by a
member which did not fall directly into any of the award categories but nonetheless enhanced the image of the
QWA not just locally or nationally, but on an international scale. Miles Wydall’s QWA Home Page on the
internet attracts almost a million “hits” per year, many of them from regular return visitors to the site from
around the world. The success of Miles’ work is evident by the enormous popularity of the web site and, in
appreciation of his innovation and professionalism in creating and maintaining it, he received a Special
Recognition Award.

The final presentation of the night was that of the QWA’s highest annual award, the QWA Achiever of the Year.
In 1998 Debra Keelan’s status as a leader in sport was confirmed through a number of appointments from
various organisations. Debra represented the QWA at the Qld Olympic Council and the Australian Weightlifting
Federation strategic planning meeting, she was selected by the AWF as the weightlifting delegate to the

For Athletes With A Disability in Dubai and continued to work diligently as honorary secretary of the QWA and
treasurer of her local weightlifting club. And so the QWA Achiever trophy returned to the Keelan mantelpiece
(Mike won it last year) and the accompanying $100 donated by QWA Patron, Bert Hobl, helped finance the
ensuing celebrations.

From where I stood, the most satisfying aspect of the evening was the way that the people upon whom the
QWA relies so heavily expressed a real sense of enjoyment and personal satisfaction from their involvement in
our organisation. I think Miles Wydall summed up the feelings of all the award winners when he said, “Thanks

very much for this award, it’s nice to be recognised, but really I just love doing it”. Here! Here!

                                      Women in Weightlifting
                                               By Mal Irwin

Even in the Bad Old Days (Men Only), women had a crucial role in the development of weightlifting. The
positive influences were ladies who organised fund-raising, put up with young lifters using their homes like
boarding houses, and allowed husbands the precious training time to represent our state. This is of course
anathema to feminists. It was considered unladylike to even think of lifting weights. The very idea of vain men
building themselves up with bulging muscles seemed to strike at the very heart of modesty and chastity. And of

                                              28
Page 29 QWA Journal

course, it causes muscle-boundedness, poor reflexes, and an enlarged heart! The negative stereotypes that
attached themselves to lonely male lifters was the downside of female involvement.

The turning point in our fine Sunshine State, of course, came when our lovely Queensland Roses captured the
hearts of four strongmen (pc strength athletes) from the British Isles. I have to take care of national
sensitivities; note the kerfuffle over the English flag in KL, it is after all only one component in the Union Jack, as
was raised on the first night.

We used to be taught all that flag stuff in Boy Scouts, itself an off-shoot of the concept of British Empire,
founded by Lord Baden-Powell to teach young lads the pleasures of self-discipline and leadership, long before
the impossible and essential spectre of world peace was forced upon us by Nuclear Warfare and ICBM’s. A lot of
blueing still goes on between the gaps that the great powers can’t either be bothered to interfere with
(Afghanistan, Ethiopia) or find too domestically difficult to play straight (note: Saddam stays quiet while Bill
stews in his own juices at home).

This is of course, directly relevant to weightlifting. One of the arenas that the USSR used to display its glorious
powers, superior science, and loyalty of comrades was in sport, as an adjunct to the sinister political games
being played throughout the world.

Of course, the initial value of our fine ladies in capturing the hands of our four Games heroes was the sudden
attainment of skills and knowledge gained on the edge of the storm of competition in the European arena,
information we could only read about in such edited journals as “Iron Man” and “Strength and Health”. These
of course were American, usually catering to the “quick fix” mentality, and thus jaundiced. One only has to
peruse the current “Muscle and Fitness” zines for some months or years to gain the impression that fads are
deliberately pushed for commercial gain. What about insulin? Would you get a boost if you had a sugar feed
after training to get your own system started? Mightn’t this lead to adult onset diabetes?

Now of course, I will gather my considerable intellectual insights together, to come to grips with the Title of this
article (The Editor is more likely to put an article full of ramblings in if it satisfies equity guidelines). Why have
Women in Weightlifting transformed the sport? Because weightlifting used to be seen as not only a male
activity, but tied up very much with the concept of masculinity. Instead of being seen as a sport, lifting was seen
as a pose, by vain and egotistical men bent on proving either their own, or their country or region’s superiority.
Of course all athletic endeavours had their origin in these basic human emotions. There was even rivalry
between sports, with football codes being supposedly superior to weight-training for whatever reason I can’t
recall (perhaps the best reason I ever got from a young lady, quarter of a century ago, was that lifting is boring
to watch. Well, so are local footy matches {and cricket}.)

                                                 29
Page 30 QWA Journal

This spectre of overwhelmlingly powerful supermen, freaks as most people assumed, repelled sports fans bred
on team sports. The mental association of course, was the circus strong-man, lumped together with the
sideshow freaks, rather than serious, dedicated athletes. This tended to frighten beginners away from the sport.

The novice who made good progress without being surrounded by keen acolytes slightly further along the path
to achievement was rare. No-one who trained alone in his garage came to competitions. Whichever lifters
made a mark in the bad old days were nurtured by acceptance of their early efforts, and there usually had to be
a handy guidepost. I think of the Uni.club in the early 70’s where everybody from middleweight to heavyweight
lifted within a band of about ten kilos difference in total.

The presence of women in weightlifting has helped to turn lifting into a pure sport, where achievement of good
lifts is admired for itself. The contest comes down to the result attained. The feedback I get is rather different
today than what I had in my twenties. Some people now actually understand the idea of totals, winning on
bodyweight, and scientific training programs . And women (non-lifters) don’t question the point of a skinny
fellow like me “trying to build myself up”. The remark made by Nick Ciancio has come to fruition, twenty-five
years on. In an interview, the “Greek sewing-machine mechanic… born in Sicily”, said “It wouldn’t matter if you
looked like a monkey, gorilla or Ron Clarke to be a good lifter” (no apologies to Ron at that time). Sadly, I can no
longer locate the newspaper cutting, but these words are immortal, no? Perhaps I can do a column or three on
my visits to Melbourne.

It is a tragedy that the women’s sport is sullied by drug cheating, because the achievements of clean lifters is
diminished by the association by sport with the cheats. It has been rather a case of schadenfreude (A donkey
term used by the columnist Phillip Adams to indicate his literary skills. Supposedly taking vicarious pleasure in
other’s misfortune) to observe other sports going through their self-examinations. But I think any weightlifter
who achieves is still going to be under a cloud. We could be seeing a parallel to the Sydney Water crisis, where
high tech testing is exposing faults which previously went unnoticed. At least weightlifting was one of the first
to start.

In short, I feel that the women contribute far more than their mere presence on the platform. Apart from the
fact that they set many more records, the publicity machine is probably more likely to follow gender-balanced
individual sports. This is because of the interest in the contest rather than the pure spectacle, as I noted some
months ago. And another thing; some of the most determined lifts I have seen in recent years come in women’s
contests. The duel in the inaugural League contest between Deb. Keelan and Amanda Philips was awe inspiring.
I would allow a month between PB’s, not two hours.

Page 31 QWA Journal

                                                   By Ian Moir

The return of the Queensland 1000 provided a wonderful afternoon of entertainment for the throng of people
who gathered at the Cougars Weightlifting Club in Brisbane on November 21st for the Grand Final event. The
unique format of this competition once again emphasised the importance of competitors arriving at the
platform with a well formulated competition strategy, as the main contenders jockeyed for position in the
snatch and the top four or five placings changing with almost every attempt at clean & jerk. And just to add a
little more spice to the mix, the nine competitors lifted in a "round" style, with all lifters completing their first
attempts, then all lifters completing their second attempts and so on.

Anthony Martin was the favourite to take out the first prize because the "best lifts" against which his
performance in the final would be measured were ten kilos less than his actual personal bests, achieved outside
of the specified Queensland 1000 qualifying events. This did not however mean that Anthony was going to have
an easy time of it and he really started to sweat after "only" snatching 145kg and missing his first clean & jerk at
195kg. He recovered his composure to secure his second attempt at 195kg and then sat back to see what he
would need to do once all the other competitors had completed their final lifts.

Meanwhile a real battle was being waged for third place. Melissa Nightingale had tried in vane to make the
63kg category using the Cougars' new sauna and had to line up in the 69kg class. Angela Bentley had trouble
securing all but her first attempts and Barry Harden, unlike some of the day's competitors, was being judged
against fairly realistic PB's. In the end, less than two points separated these three in third, fourth and fifth place
respectively.

Toowoomba's Melissa Bethune came within striking distance of "Marto" when she clean & jerked her second
attempt of 102.5kg and prepared for a new record lift of 107.5kg. Melissa's third attempt was unsuccessful and
the pressure was off Anthony who decided that he just had to have a go at breaking the Commonwealth 105+kg
category record of 207.5kg set by Darren Liddell of New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in September.
With the barbell set at 208kg Anthony looked to be doing a lot of positive thinking, unfortunately lifting weights
of this magnitude require a lot more than that and he was unsuccessful.

After Anthony Martin's final attempt, the time came to select the lifters that would face each other in the
bonus "knock-out" round. Qantas Corporate Accounts Manager, Peter Barton did the honours and drew the
names of the two gladiators at random from the original nine competitors. The lucky pair were Melissa
Nightingale and Barry Harden. Gladiators? Or should that be the beauty and the beast?

Melissa and Barry both decided to battle it out with the clean & jerk and they quickly succeeded in lifting 80%,
85%, 90%, 95% and 100% of their respective personal best weight. Once past this mark, Melissa and Barry
entered unchartered territory and both succeeded with 102%. Melissa's lower lot number put her first in line
for 103% (74.5kg) and her failure at this weight opened the door for Barry to grab the $500 bonus prize. Barry
faced up to 118.5kg but the day's work had taken it's toll on him as well and the lift wasn't completed. And so,
according to the rules, Melissa was announced as the winner of the bonus round because she had finished with
a higher score in the main competition and she added the $500 bonus to her $200 third prize and headed for
Schoolie's Week in a big way.

                                                 31
Page 32 QWA Journal

As the competition drew to an end and the tops were knocked off a beer or two, more than one competitor
was heard to mutter, "if only I'd gotten that one lift". Perhaps that's something worth remembering.
