                                     To Audition:
1. Attend the AUDITION WORKSHOP on Monday 9/19 in the auditorium. At this
Audition Workshop, you will learn how to audition and be given audition materials
(monologue, song lyrics, dance notes, and a CD).

2. Sign up for an AUDITION SLOT for either Wednesday 9/21 or Thursday 9/22. [Sign
up sheets will be posted outside room 110 (the Drama room) on Tuesday 9/20.]

3. Come to your AUDITION with your CONTRACT (signed by a parent or guardian)
and your AUDITION SHEET filled out. Be prepared to perform your monologue, song,
and dance.

4. Also, remember to submit your CLUB REGISTRATION and FEE to the main office
or Ms. McReynolds.

Remember: EVERYONE WHO COMPLETES THE AUDITION WILL BE CAST IN THE
                            PLAY!

                                     Please Note:
 The most desirable roles will go to the actors who show responsibility (come to
auditions prepared, i.e. bring their signed contracts and know their audition material
well), project their voices, and act the character well. 8th graders and past Pierce
Players DO NOT get preference over new members.

 All postings (call-back lists, cast lists, etc.) will be hung on the bulletin board outside
of the Drama Room (110). This information will also be available online at
  http://www.pierceplayers.com.

 If you sign up for a late audition time, DO NOT go home first and return at your
audition time. Stay at school in case we run ahead of schedule and can hear your
  audition early.

 Please remember that many students are auditioning for only a handful of leading
roles. Casting decisions must be made according to what is best for the play. Please
try to have a positive attitude and show up to the first rehearsal ready to work. Please
remember that every role, including chorus, is critical to the success of the show.

             AUDITION MATERIALS
For Auditions, prepare 1 song and 1 monologue. It is strongly suggested
that you have them memorized. Perform with appropriate expression,
movements, and character voices. Show us what you can do!

                               Songs:
“I’ll Know” (CD track #7 for accompaniment and #40 for vocals)

I’LL KNOW, WHEN MY LOVE COMES ALONG
      I’LL KNOW IN MY HEART
      I’LL KNOW, AND I WON’T EVER ASK:
“AM I RIGHT? AM I WISE? AM I SMART?”
BUT I’LL STOP AND I’LL STARE AT THAT FACE IN THE
            THRONG
YES, I’LL KNOW WHEN MY LOVE COMES ALONG.

“Guys and Dolls” (CD track #13 for accompaniment and #43 for vocals)

WHEN YOU SEE A GUY, REACH FOR STARS IN THE SKY,
YOU CAN BET THAT HE’S DOING IT FOR SOME DOLL.
WHEN YOU SPOT A JOHN WAITING OUT IN THE RAIN
CHANCES ARE HE’S INSANE AS ONLY A JOHN CAN BE FOR
           A JANE.
WHEN YOU MEET A GENT PAYING ALL KINDS OF RENT
FOR A FLAT THAT COULD FLATTEN THE TAJ MAHAL
CALL IT SAD, CALL IT FUNNY, BUT IT’S BETTER THAN
           EVEN MONEY
THAT THE GUY’S ONLY DOING IT FOR SOME DOLL.
                                Monologues

About Nathan Detroit: Nathan is the heart and soul of GUYS AND DOLLS. He’s a
street-smart, fast-talking gambler with excellent comic timing. His one weakness is his
fiancee, Adelaide. He genuinely loves her, but is afraid of the commitment.

NATHAN: (talking to Adelaide) Wedding veil? License? Blood test?!
Wait a minute, honey. This is moving too fast. Sure, I know we’ve been
engaged…for 14 years, but why rush things, right? Believe me, Adelaide, I
love you, and I want us to be the happiest couple that ever was in this here
world. Look, you’re getting yourself upset. Wait, Adelaide! Look, I’m
down on my knees. I’m sorry. OK. OK, you win. We’ll get married. I
promise. Just not tonight!

About Sarah Brown: Sarah is the head of the Save-a-Soul Mission and, in many ways,
the classic “good girl”. She is kind and virtuous, perhaps even a bit uptight at times.
Beneath that cool exterior, however, is a more adventurous side waiting to get out. Sarah
must be able to show these two distinct sides of herself and be able to hold her own with
the likes of Sky Masterson.

SARAH: (to a crowd of people on the street) Brothers and Sisters, resist the
Devil and he will flee from you. That is what the Bible tells us. (pointing to
some men) Hear my you gamblers…with your dice, your cards, your horses.
Just around the corner is our little Mission where you are always welcome to
seek refuge from this jungle of sin. (the crowd is starting to break away and
move on; Sarah is loosing confidence) Join me, Brothers and Sisters, in
resisting the Devil, and we can put…the Devil… (it’s a losing battle; no one
is listening) Remember friends, the Save-a-Soul Mission located at 409
West 49th Street, open all day and night…with free coffee and
doughnuts…Oh, never mind.
