Interpreting a Visual Text - Cozzone’s Prison Zone [boring title]! Chris Cozzone, a graduate of the University of New Mexico [insert comma] has made his career as an in-demand photojournalist. He created his Prison Zone [italics] photographs to assert that not everything is as it seems. In their article written for Prison Life magazine [insert comma] Wynn [who?] and Cozzone state that “the drug business in the joint is as profitable and as structured as it is on the streets” [citation? oh my God, do you mean to say you did extra research that you didn’t have to do? I think I’m getting verklempt]. In photograph 9 nine, [title?], the caption suggests that once a prisoner is in prison there are no consequences for doing drugs. This photograph is in color and the viewer focus is pinpointed directly to the needle in the hands of the convict. This [what? see rules] could propose that drugs are done in the open with no fear of consequence. The subject of this photograph is in clear focus but we [no first or second person] do not see a face [insert comma] so we can assume that this could be anyone in any cell. [yes, good] The photographer properly exposed this photo and there are details in both the shadows as well as the highlighted areas. This could further suggest that there are minute details that go along with every drug transaction. Drug deals are made and the money gets spread around to all those that are involved in trafficking. In one sweeping view we take in the whole scene and are both shocked and appalled [insert comma] which is the irony of the action. Drug dealers are out on the street and our hopes are that once we place them behind bars this action serves as a deterrent for future offences [insert comma] which is not always the case [insert comma] as evidenced by this telling photo.
